Acid Bong | In reply to @neobrain:matrix.org The daemon speaks basically the same protocol in either case, right? I don't rely on any internals here, just stdout/stderr tool output and --json parts (hence the need to test with both lix and nix) at the moment yes, only parsing is client-specific (at least in terms of builtins.warn, which was added at different times to each, and pipe-operator(s), which are implemented differently in each)
i personally use Nix for everything, but build NixOS closures with Lix, cuz i like the multiline output | 07:38:18 |
0x4fbb09 it/its ⛯✇ΘΔ | # nix --version
nix (Lix, like Nix) 2.95.0-pre20260112-dev_f431464
[...]
# nix shell nixpkgs#nix
# nix --version
nix (Nix) 2.31.2+2
yeah, that should work? ... unless your shell config is weird or something ig?

neobrain | Huhm, interesting. Will have to check again later when I'm back at my pc | 07:47:23 |
aloisw | In reply to @acidbong:envs.net normally nix-shell, nix shell and nix develop all prepend the temporary paths and only them Before starting the shell though, so shell init files may still change it. | 11:59:57 |
neobrain | right. so the shell hooks nix/lix installed to my /etc/profile have this: export PATH="$NIX_LINK/bin:/nix/var/nix/profiles/default/bin:$PATH", which is why lix continues to be preferred | 12:02:03 |
Sofie 🏳️⚧️ (she/her) | @k900:0upti.me do you think running a homelab with data center software like open stack would be "fun", not practical but "fun" 😭 | 12:37:49 |
Sofie 🏳️⚧️ (she/her) | I need to reset the password of my supermicro IPMI tho | 12:38:22 |
K900 | Uhh | 12:39:24 |
K900 | Depends on how much you hate yourself I guess | 12:39:32 |
raitobezarius | i think it's a good learning lesson but openstack is definitely not the first thing you should be trying to run if you starting out | 13:13:41 |
Sofie 🏳️⚧️ (she/her) | What are the benefits of someone using openstack then? Instead of using containers and ceph or even proxmox | 13:23:49 |
| نيولامپس changed their display name from نيولامپس [neolampis; he/him] to نيولامپس. | 13:28:57 |
K900 | It's kind of the only open source thing that works at VERY LARGE scale | 13:29:05 |
Sofie 🏳️⚧️ (she/her) | datacenter scale? | 13:37:04 |
just1602 | Yeah, the only place I know about use open stack is OVHcloud and the university in my city, which has multiple datacenters and also sell VPS and managed kubernetes to public org. | 13:37:10 |
just1602 | * Yeah, the only place I know who use open stack is OVHcloud and the university in my city, which has multiple datacenters and also sell VPS and managed kubernetes to public org. | 13:37:36 |
K900 | Like four digits nodes | 13:37:38 |
truh | I think LIDL uses it for their cloud too | 13:42:51 |
Sofie 🏳️⚧️ (she/her) | they have their own cloud?? | 13:43:54 |
K900 | I mean they are massive | 13:44:18 |
truh | it.schwarz | 13:44:34 |
Sofie 🏳️⚧️ (she/her) | what is their tld 😭 | 13:44:56 |
K900 | Over 12800 locations according to wikipedia | 13:45:53 |
K900 | At that scale you basically have to run your own infra | 13:46:08 |
just1602 | For a fancy homelab that ressemble production like env with UI and everything I'd look into incus + garage or something like that | 13:47:08 |
ginkogruen | I’m using the git version of lix from nixpkgs on my mac.
But I somehow don’t get a cached build (which I think I did previously) and it fails during building when running tests.
> FAILED ../tests/functional2/commands/test_build/test_reference_checks.py::test_regression_partial_build[files0]
> FAILED ../tests/functional2/commands/test_build/test_reference_checks.py::test_structured_attrs_discard[files0]
Is this something known because I couldn’t find issues (on nixpkgs & lix) regarding that so far? | 13:48:43 |
Marie | it's the name of the company | 13:52:21 |
Marie | they have their own tld because they have too much money | 13:52:30 |
truh | claiming a color for your company tld is almost as annoying as .fox | 13:53:44 |
raitobezarius | if you are private cloud shaped, OpenStack makes sense | 14:11:47 |
