@k900:0upti.meK900And maintain persistent machine identity etc19:35:15
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomo ok well i'm looking for recipes like "we use a pxe boot sys over this kind of link layer" kinda thing. 19:35:23
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomoalthough ideally not actually that if there's better approaches19:35:42
@k900:0upti.meK900 This is currently not a problem that has a pre-made solution, but it is absolutely possible to build one 19:35:43
@k900:0upti.meK900 And your exact network setup will depend on your exact requirements 19:36:06
@k900:0upti.meK900 It's really not the network setup that's the problem 19:36:06
@k900:0upti.meK900 The core idea is not complicated, all the fiddly bits are, and that's the part no one has done yet 19:36:33
@k900:0upti.meK900 Or at least no one has made into a reusable thing 19:36:41
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomook, so in other words there isn't much you know of19:37:05
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomowell that's kinda interesting19:37:19
@k900:0upti.meK900There isn't much full stop19:37:19
@k900:0upti.meK900 I know what there is 19:37:22
@k900:0upti.meK900And it is not much19:37:30
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomogotcha19:37:42
@k900:0upti.meK900 Maybe if you're looking for a startup idea 19:37:42
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomolol19:37:51
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomoalready got too many of those as part of the first one19:38:01
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomo hmm, this also feels like something that could fit well in a "libre boot" ecosys come to think of it 19:38:23
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomowhere the bios comes up with sshd + basic image waiting for a deployment19:38:47
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomohuh, speaking of, TIL that pxe is now part of the uefi std?19:39:58
@k900:0upti.meK900 Always has been 19:40:17
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomo

The concept behind the PXE originated in the early days of protocols like BOOTP/DHCP/TFTP, and as of 2015 it forms part of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) standard. In modern data centers, PXE is the most frequent choice[1] for operating system booting, installation and deployment.

19:40:30
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomooh well i didn't know then19:40:33
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomo and it's weird they quote "since 2015" there then 19:40:41
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomohttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preboot_Execution_Environment19:40:49
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomoahh but maybe that's when uefi became a std ?19:42:48
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomo🫣19:42:54
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomo K900: so i guess shorter question is, have you used / known-about-anyone-using pxe booted nixos and if so is there anything i can read / lurk-on about it? 19:44:48
@k900:0upti.meK900 I do, but it is not public information 19:45:16
@goodboy:matrix.orglord_fomoahh ok19:54:56
