@ronef:matrix.orgronef

I've been heads down making sure that we can lock this in for us so super happy to finally announce it.

TL;DR - AWS open source teams are stepping up to support again and secured $15K/month for the next 12 months for our S3! The biggest item on my mind here is that we need to continue our efforts in the "Sustainable Nix" category in the long term.

Obviously big thank you to everyone that was helping with this in the past 2 months!
If anyone wants to help boost some awareness as we have more calls to action following it -> https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7232075509084381186/

@ronef:matrix.orgronefNext up there's a few CTA's regarding our Equinix Metal usage/funding.17:48:05
@ronef:matrix.orgronefAnyone familiar with Nix/NixOS usage in the wild with ARM or Ampere hardware?18:43:57
@k900:0upti.meK900How ARM are we talking?18:48:46
@hexa:lossy.networkhexanot much Ampere usage, lots of ARM SBCs and Appliances18:49:49
@ronef:matrix.orgronefContext is that Cole and I just spoke with the Ampere team and while they don't have a specific program to support open source projects directly, there are potential unique things we can do if we had more case studies/examples/external utilizations around Nix. Helps provide the signal to their leadership that this is somethign they should support.19:08:17

@vcunat:matrix.orgvcunatI expect that WorksOnARM is interested in any ARM. (we really support only aarch64 well) I expect aarch64-darwin doesn't count šŸ¤”08:00:48
@vcunat:matrix.orgvcunatI've heard about stuff like this: https://gitlab.com/Cynerd/nixturris but AFAIK it's just a few individuals playing around on small stuff, so it probably won't count.08:01:54
@vcunat:matrix.orgvcunat(no significant deployment most likely)08:02:47

well, Hetzner's arm cloud is Ampere based, so that might account for some usage (https://www.hetzner.com/press-release/arm64-cloud/)
08:04:29
@f0x:pixie.townf0xcurrently running just one of those (with NixOS) but considering migrating more 08:05:18
@ronef:matrix.orgronefThanks! Will DM with a few more questions if that's ok :) 16:03:18

We use Hetzner's dedicated Ampere servers in production at nixbuild.net, with NixOS. I think the nix-community folks also have one of those for running their builds.

@arianvp:matrix.orgArianWe have entertained the thought of switching our AWS compute to aarch64. Given all our developers are on ARM macbooks it actually simplifies a lot. 13:30:39
@arianvp:matrix.orgArianBut I dont think AWS is Ampereā€¦ they have their own ARM chips. I was really close to buying an Ampere workstation though. does that count? :D 17:10:40
