| I wrote quite a lengthy internal document at Mercury that convinced leadership to sponsor the S3 project back when we made the larger donation I could ask if I can share that with you Ron. Could help others at companies convince their employers to sponsor. | 18:29:02 | |
| I did have a secret hope other companies would match Mercury's donation but that unfortunately didn't happen | 18:29:54 | |
| And you're definitely open to come for coffee to see if we can make more opportunities for this :) | 18:30:34 | |
| Like I'd want to give people guide rails for maintainers how to bring this up with their employer that theyd like them to sponsor Nix and move needles. I think it'd be helpful . I think a lot of people underestimate how much can be done if just 1 person in a company is motivated to push a budget request through | 18:34:15 | |
| We have a lot of examples of this so I can only say that it would be an incredible idea | 18:34:54 | |

| As a CEO of a (smaller) company that uses Nix, I've considered reaching out about donations/sponsorships in the past -- but I'm very hesitant to even appear to support the foundation when I keep hearing (and in some cases, seeing) that the project has a reputation for ostracizing underrepresented folks. | 19:33:41 | |
| I would love to be able to feel good about supporting Nix, and would love to be able to convince others to do so (I routinely give conference talks/keynotes/trainings and similar), but I think I'd struggle without some tangible proof things are being addressed first. | 19:35:59 | |

This is a bit hard to act on, can you list a few things you would like to change or a few points that you think need addressing? | 07:05:23

In reply to @janik0:matrix.orgI surely don't speak for them, but I'm willing to bet mandatory declarations of all potential conflicts of interest by all foundation members would go a long way towards building trust. | 14:47:09
| (make sure everybody is operating on the same definition of "conflict of interest" there) | 14:48:02 | |
| That should be a priority | 15:34:37 | |
| * That should be a priority, especially if we feel it can help us build up | 15:35:15 | |
| As promised: here are the published by-laws https://github.com/NixOS/foundation?tab=readme-ov-file#the-nixos-foundation-by-laws cc Arian and delroth since you were discussing the how board membership is defined | 16:10:02 | |
In reply to @arianvp:matrix.orghttps://wasabi.com/ has lower network egress charges as far as I can recall, and I wonder if they would be interested in sponsoring and hosting? ( I don't know anyone there directly, and maybe it's been discussed already?) | 19:14:40
| there's plenty of alternatives to S3 that could be interesting for our use case, they were not a viable option until recently due the costs it would take to move our data out of S3. Now that Amazon is waving those charges for people leaving their cloud, I know the foundation has been talking with some S3-like services regarding possible sponsorships. | 19:47:40 | |

In reply to @samrose:matrix.orghow about backblaze? | 02:45:19
| Redacted or Malformed Event | 03:27:00 | |
| (removed a comment about backblaze pricing after realizing I don't really know enough numbers to speculate on various object storage providers) | 03:29:09 | |
| I'm going to meet up for coffee with another potential provider this week. If there's others folks want to look into, happy to help out | 17:52:00 | |
| What do you mean exactly with "provider"? | 18:52:54 | |
| Storage provider | 19:12:24 | |
In reply to @janik0:matrix.org Apologies for the delay -- I wanted to talk to some of the folks at my company (Tactile Metrology) who are more active contributors to Nix and related projects. I understand that tangible/measurable progress on this kind of thing can be difficult to provide. A lot of what would be comforting to me on this front would be to see more active representation of underrepresented groups in foundation decision making – whether at the board level, or at any level that has the ability to make binding decisions about parts of the foundation-represented/controlled ecosystem. | 19:16:39
