In my experience of working with OEMs, they are also looking for some sort of validation that all the hardware works as expected and power saving targets are met.
well I have the F13 and I work on fixing it in NixOS and I can tell you there's a lot to do :D

@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezarius(but there's more than just fixing it in NixOS, :P)14:53:48

(should we make a channel for this? I'd like to help, but don't need the laptop. I think we are not in foundation territory anymore and should move this discussion :))
we can move to #dev:nixos.org imho

@tomberek:matrix.orgtomberekThe hardware support is not perfect in nixoshardware, so there are some issues to solve; making the whole experience first class is also some real work.14:54:09

What are those issues concretely?

Matt said Framework Laptop 16 first, then Framework Laptop 13 to follow since the 16 is super set of the 13 in terms of hardware support.

What they are requesting is documentation/wiki maintained by the NixOS community that clearly describes how to fully enable/configure NixOS for the AMD base Framework 16 and 13. Matt cited the Arch Linux wiki pages for Framework 16 and 13 as good examples of the detail required. No mention of coreboot yet.

Btw in general, I would suggest doing a discourse post once the details are worked out about what would be expected and what given in return. And as for matrix you can probably just create a matrix room for NixOS on framework laptops and ask for it to be added to the matrix space in #matrix-suggestions:nixos.org

@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusI'm not aware of any big problem beyond (a) someone need to write the code (b) someone need to maintain it (c) someone need to test it (d) bonus: someone need to autodetect and install those profiles14:54:48
@tomberek:matrix.orgtomberekWimpy: A similar thing happened a bit ago with some RISC boards. A group got put together, people nominated to get hardware, regular updates and reports of progress. Procedurally, I'd recommend ensuring this is viewed like a grant, not some lottery or giveaway.14:56:47
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusI'm not so sure if this is grant worthy compared to some piece of RISC-V SBC that is hard to buy14:58:08
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezarius * I'm not so sure if this is grant worthy compared to some piece of RISC-V SBC that is hard to buy / get14:58:12
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusFramework laptops are quite popular among NixOS developers14:58:18

@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariushere again I wish we had Zulip14:59:53
@patka_123:matrix.org@patka_123:matrix.org I'm also not really sure what I'd write now that I think about it. Everything works out of the box and the only thing you do is add the nixosHardware thingy 14:59:59
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusauto detect at nixos-generate-config phase honestly15:00:20
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusand experienced people to work on the power savings situation15:00:27
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusbut SO is pestering me with her framework, so I was planning to send PRs soon to fix it15:00:36
@tomberek:matrix.orgtomberekWifi and Webcam drivers need work, suspend+hibernate, HDMI reliability. I'm sure there are enhancements we can show off via their modules (Modules for Modules!). Documenting it nicely and completely is work. Marketing and telling the world is work. Testing lots of scenarios is work.15:03:34
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusFor the Framework??15:04:11
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusAll of that just work (?)15:04:18
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusOr are you talking in general for hardware stuff?15:04:25
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusIn which case, I'd say this is out of scope for the project except if someone write telemetry software for this and we start cooperation with OEM on this matter15:04:39
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezarius(though, from my small experience, we have a slightly better nixos-hardware experience than the Archwiki on some laptop…)15:04:59
@tomberek:matrix.orgtomberekSpecifically for Framework. Lots of people had problems at NixConNA with HDMI. Wifi can sometimes get flakes. Don't get me wrong, I love my Framework and am looking at getting a new one, but it's not perfect. Technical matters aside, you need this nicely documented, written about, (a video produced?), installers worked on.15:06:57
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusAren't you confusing HDMI HDCP issues with laptop issues?15:07:15
@hexa:lossy.networkhexawe have hdmi splitters in the hackspace for precisely this issue15:08:01
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusRedacted or Malformed Event15:08:05
@hexa:lossy.networkhexayou survive one more round15:08:16
* @raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezarius flee15:08:21
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezarius tomberek let's do this in #nixos-framework:matrix.org 15:08:29
