In need some assistance in directing this question 🧭

My friend Matt is the community manager at Framework. I spoke to him during SCaLE and he offered to supply hardware to contributors who can deliver Framework enablement and documentation to NixOS users.

He has followed up requesting a Matrix space to connect Framework with the NixOS contributors who can assist.

  1. How do I go about requesting a Matrix channel for this collaboration?
  2. How do we identify who would be good candidates to work on this?

Tagging tomberek as I briefly spoke to Tom about this during SCaLE.

@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezarius Wimpy: What Framework enablement are we looking for? 14:04:56
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusWe already have nixos-hardware containing Framework laptop support14:05:04
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusAre we talking about enablement for coreboot features or different things?14:05:12

Wimpy: What Framework enablement are we looking for?

Matt said Framework Laptop 16 first, then Framework Laptop 13 to follow since the 16 is super set of the 13 in terms of hardware support.

What they are requesting is documentation/wiki maintained by the NixOS community that clearly describes how to fully enable/configure NixOS for the AMD base Framework 16 and 13. Matt cited the Arch Linux wiki pages for Framework 16 and 13 as good examples of the detail required. No mention of coreboot yet.

14:42:32
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusin exchange of laptops for that?14:43:26
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusthat seems a sweet deal14:43:28
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariushttps://github.com/NixOS/nixos-hardware/tree/master/framework FWIW14:43:59
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusIf I had to make a proposal, I don't think it's a particularly hard task and if they are willing to offer a Framework laptop to take ownership of that, I would suggest that we look in our community for marginalized folks who may not afford a laptop and may need one14:44:31
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusThat's also an interesting exercise for community to figure out the process for this14:44:46

Do you know if they would be interested in having official preinstalled nixos images?
14:44:58
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusI don't think Framework does preinstalled Linux14:45:12
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusI think it creates tax issues14:45:23
@qyliss:fairydust.spaceAlyssa Rosstax issues?14:45:28
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezarius(so they won't if I'm not wrong)14:45:34

tax issues?
I think they sell the whole laptop as detached pieces
14:46:00
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusInstead of a whole laptop14:46:02
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusYeah, a quick Google search with those keywords seems to show folks speculating about that, I don't see any official communication, but this is plausible14:47:33
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezarius(but there's clear communication that Framework won't offer preinstalled Linux until they revisit this though they 'want to do that')14:47:47
@patka_123:matrix.org@patka_123:matrix.org That is not true. You can buy a built laptop from Framework 14:48:21
@qyliss:fairydust.spaceAlyssa Rosswith windows14:48:42
@qyliss:fairydust.spaceAlyssa Rosswe're getting a bit OT though14:49:03
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusI stand corrected then14:49:16

I am sure they would love that, but it hasn't been discussed. They like the idea of something like hardware.framework.<model>.enable = true;
14:51:13
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezarius So in the past @Mic92 had nixos-hardware inside of nixpkgs 14:51:39
@tomberek:matrix.orgtomberekDoc team has been trying to establish the new wiki, so it would be good to include them.14:51:55
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezarius so you could do something like imports = [ "${modulesPath}/laptop/framework/13-inch" ]; 14:51:55
