Wimpy | In need some assistance in directing this question ðŸ§
My friend Matt is the community manager at Framework. I spoke to him during SCaLE and he offered to supply hardware to contributors who can deliver Framework enablement and documentation to NixOS users.
He has followed up requesting a Matrix space to connect Framework with the NixOS contributors who can assist.
- How do I go about requesting a Matrix channel for this collaboration?
- How do we identify who would be good candidates to work on this?
Tagging tomberek as I briefly spoke to Tom about this during SCaLE.

raitobezarius | Wimpy: What Framework enablement are we looking for? | 14:04:56 |
raitobezarius | We already have nixos-hardware containing Framework laptop support | 14:05:04 |
raitobezarius | Are we talking about enablement for coreboot features or different things? | 14:05:12 |
Wimpy | In reply to @raitobezarius:matrix.org Wimpy: What Framework enablement are we looking for? Matt said Framework Laptop 16 first, then Framework Laptop 13 to follow since the 16 is super set of the 13 in terms of hardware support.
What they are requesting is documentation/wiki maintained by the NixOS community that clearly describes how to fully enable/configure NixOS for the AMD base Framework 16 and 13. Matt cited the Arch Linux wiki pages for Framework 16 and 13 as good examples of the detail required. No mention of coreboot yet.
| 14:42:32 |
raitobezarius | in exchange of laptops for that? | 14:43:26 |
raitobezarius | that seems a sweet deal | 14:43:28 |
raitobezarius | https://github.com/NixOS/nixos-hardware/tree/master/framework FWIW | 14:43:59 |
raitobezarius | If I had to make a proposal, I don't think it's a particularly hard task and if they are willing to offer a Framework laptop to take ownership of that, I would suggest that we look in our community for marginalized folks who may not afford a laptop and may need one | 14:44:31 |
raitobezarius | That's also an interesting exercise for community to figure out the process for this | 14:44:46 |

Do you know if they would be interested in having official preinstalled nixos images? | 14:44:58 |
raitobezarius | I don't think Framework does preinstalled Linux | 14:45:12 |
raitobezarius | I think it creates tax issues | 14:45:23 |
Alyssa Ross | tax issues? | 14:45:28 |
raitobezarius | (so they won't if I'm not wrong) | 14:45:34 |
raitobezarius | In reply to @qyliss:fairydust.space tax issues? I think they sell the whole laptop as detached pieces | 14:46:00 |
raitobezarius | Instead of a whole laptop | 14:46:02 |
raitobezarius | Yeah, a quick Google search with those keywords seems to show folks speculating about that, I don't see any official communication, but this is plausible | 14:47:33 |
raitobezarius | (but there's clear communication that Framework won't offer preinstalled Linux until they revisit this though they 'want to do that') | 14:47:47 |
@patka_123:matrix.org | That is not true. You can buy a built laptop from Framework | 14:48:21 |
Alyssa Ross | with windows | 14:48:42 |
Alyssa Ross | we're getting a bit OT though | 14:49:03 |
raitobezarius | I stand corrected then | 14:49:16 |

Wimpy | In reply to @janik0:matrix.org Do you know if they would be interested in having official preinstalled nixos images? I am sure they would love that, but it hasn't been discussed. They like the idea of something like hardware.framework.<model>.enable = true; | 14:51:13 |
raitobezarius | So in the past @Mic92 had nixos-hardware inside of nixpkgs | 14:51:39 |
tomberek | Doc team has been trying to establish the new wiki, so it would be good to include them. | 14:51:55 |
raitobezarius | so you could do something like imports = [ "${modulesPath}/laptop/framework/13-inch" ]; | 14:51:55 |
