The question here is basically do we want to allow Community Projects that have a commercial touch.
I would be fine if we do so, just wanted to give people the chance to voice their concerns if there are any.

As far as I understand the point of the program is to onboard people to OSS giving them a kind of internship.
For example CERN and GitLab are also both accepted to GSoC.

oh, I got it mixed up with season of docs I think: https://discourse.nixos.org/t/season-of-docs-gsoc-for-documentation/2402 Don't know how the docs counter part handles it. It might also be important to note that GSoC only pays participants but not mentors. In general I agree that it's preferable to work on projects that are directly related to the nixos org but afaik we don't have a hard cap on participants so I don't see a problem with helping nix community projects. | 15:00:10 |

FWIW, I feel aligned with joepie91 🏳️🌈 . This is also our first year with the program so I don't have much experience with it. If we feel it would be helpful I can ask a few other communities who might have been doing the program for longer for their approach to it. a reasonable policy might be something like:
- You have to suggest ideas for a Nix/OS project or Nix-Community Project that otherwise wouldn't get worked on.
- But it's fine to submit a idea for a Nix Project with a commercial touch if a potential participant specifically suggests it (as long as it fits the other criteria like being OSS and closely related to the nix-community are given)

| Jonas Chevalier | There is a question of what falls within the scope of the project, but overall I think the focus should be on finding capable mentors, and more importantly that the students are having a good experience and hopefully become our star contributors of tomorrow. Most of the time, my understanding is that GSoC is more work for the mentor and the quality of contributions are those of a junior. I wouldn't count this exactly as free work. | 20:33:07 |
