@antifuchs:asf.computerantifuchsI'm building a system config that should result in a restart of those units & we'll see if that works (:18:09:51
@antifuchs:asf.computerantifuchs would restart the following units: nix-daemon.service, polkit.service, systemd-networkd.service, systemd-resolved.service, systemd-udevd.service, yayyy 18:46:00

posted a link in the thread to where I think it is coming from
Thanks for digging that up! So disabling that compat layer would save us that really big Perl dependency here.

@msanft:matrix.org@msanft:matrix.orgVirtually any graphical desktop environment has a browser anyway, so I think we should remove it or at least add a toggle for it.08:25:31
@elvishjerricco:matrix.org@elvishjerricco:matrix.org Philip Taron (UTC-8): Hey, I know for several of the last systemd updates you've done a big test suite for us to check for problems before merging. I'm reviewing https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/372292 and figured I'd do the same this time, and it's a little annoying having to go through and identify all the relevant tests :P Do you think there's something we could do to simplify this down to a single attr or something? 08:40:09
@philiptaron:matrix.org@philiptaron:matrix.org

Oh yeah, it's super annoying. 😁 And I'm not even sure I got them all, especially if they didn't have a systemd prefix. I did a little script to make it a little less annoying but it's still not great.

I reckon we could add all of them to passthru.tests.

@elvishjerricco:matrix.org@elvishjerricco:matrix.orgYea that seems like a good idea18:08:44
@antifuchs:asf.computerantifuchsupdate on the networkd/resolved/udevd restart thing: my latest deploy took like 10 seconds from "stopping units" to "started additional units", went without a single hitch (and networkd/etc were restarted!)20:11:53

@elvishjerricco:matrix.org@elvishjerricco:matrix.orgLeading reason people seem to want to use grub over systemd-boot is os-prober. I wonder how hard it would be to get systemd-boot to show entries for UEFI boot entries. Then it could boot anything that sets up one of those, including windows on another drive02:52:51
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyos-prober and fancy backgrounds03:30:16
@adam:robins.wtf@adam:robins.wtfOur mirrored boots setup is pretty nice :)03:34:05
@adam:robins.wtf@adam:robins.wtfOr my more niche case where I want to have a bootloader output on serial console on systems where UEFI doesn't initialize the serial.03:35:20

@iridium:faui2k11.deiridium

This just happened again, when upgrading

• Updated input 'nixpkgs':
    'github:NixOS/nixpkgs/7ca628eee2eab151f869a04bee8e5df84abf8d1b?narHash=sha256-M4%2Bplf7HjYOAvmZ3rpMHz5rZF%2BExNyTnm/7F1iBK2Jg%3D' (2025-01-05)
  → 'github:NixOS/nixpkgs/202c851cddd45732751acf5a9c5bbd7ed6de4b26?narHash=sha256-MOQcWp6dXLLaiUs8WfGpxtCxsWbm36GKdLmQwFYjfZs%3D' (2025-01-10)

Unfortunately, this was on my router (which then lost networking and all other connectivity) 😕. I didn't trigger it again on a desktop machine, where I would have wanted to attach a debugger to the (still running) systemd instance to see why it's hanging

@arianvp:matrix.orgArianI've been trying to parse this issue several times now and I can't figure out what it's trying to say https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/36042819:48:47
@arianvp:matrix.orgArianit's a very long rant but I don't understand what concretely needs to be fixed19:49:19
@arianvp:matrix.orgArian Read like "TL;DR: ya'll are idiots who don't know what you're doing get your shit together". which is fine. but what shit do I need together 19:50:02

@antifuchs:asf.computerantifuchsCongrats to the op on breaking through the cycle of “i can’t file a documentation but because I can’t understand the problem with the documentation enough to describe it because the docs aren’t good enough”, but yeh02:14:16
@antifuchs:asf.computerantifuchs* Congrats to the op on breaking through the cycle of “i can’t file a documentation bug report because I can’t understand the problem with the documentation enough to describe it because the docs aren’t good enough”, but yeh02:14:30
@antifuchs:asf.computerantifuchsMy Read is that they’re frustrated that the .target units don’t let you accurately describe the state of the system in the wider environment?02:16:00

@eliasp:kde.orgeliasp looks like one of my secret debugging/troubleshooting tricks stopped working recently...
when I was in the need of quickly adapting a service, I often used systemctl edit --runtime … to create an override in /run/systemd/system - this path seems to be ignored now
00:28:47
@arianvp:matrix.orgArianOof00:29:18
@eliasp:kde.orgeliasp I suspect due to some downstream changes within nixpkgs? 00:30:07
