@hexa:lossy.networkhexayou can only add public aliases for homeservers you control23:26:30
@hexa:lossy.networkhexai could add #nixos-matrix-suggestions:lossy.network23:26:39
@hexa:lossy.networkhexabut I could only publish it if i was at least moderator23:26:47
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyyeah23:27:40
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI just wasn't sure if you had to be native to that homeserver to publish them23:27:41
@kevincox:matrix.orgkevincoxI think right now yes. 23:28:22
@kevincox:matrix.orgkevincoxIn the future spaces will make homeserver directories obsolete. But right now the support is sparse. (AKA just Element IIUC)23:28:51

@sumner:sumnerevans.comsumnerI don't think that homeserver directories will ever become entirely obsolete, but I think they will definitely become less necessary.23:33:02
@kevincox:matrix.orgkevincoxIDK. There was some talk about if the homeserver directory APIs could be re-targeted at a space. Basically keep them there for compatibility but under the hood they are just reading from and writing to a space. Of course there is still work to do like making sure that peeking and everything works as it does today.23:34:51
@hexa:lossy.networkhexafinding spaces is still a bit tedious :)23:35:07
@kevincox:matrix.orgkevincoxWhat do you mean by "finding"?23:35:20
@hexa:lossy.networkhexacan't exactly search for spaces23:35:36
@hexa:lossy.networkhexaonly rooms23:35:37
@sumner:sumnerevans.comsumnerdiscovery of spaces is total crap currently23:35:48
@kevincox:matrix.orgkevincoxWell this would be solved because the room directory would be a well-known space per server. And you can nest other spaces inside of it.23:36:08

There will always be a number of rooms which are not part of a space.
23:36:11
@kevincox:matrix.orgkevincoxJust like there are always a number of rooms that aren't in the server directory right now 🤷23:36:33

this sounds like a bad idea. How would permissions work? Who would be allowed to control it?
23:36:42
@kevincox:matrix.orgkevincoxAt the core both features are just a list of rooms. Spaces are growing new features quickly though.23:37:04

Can't you ask the same questions about the server directory today?
23:39:42
@Las:matrix.orgLasYes but spaces are federated, server directories aren't AFAICT.23:40:40
@Las:matrix.orgLasHuge difference23:40:45
@kevincox:matrix.orgkevincoxThat is another significant benefit of spaces over the room directory. If nixos.org dropped offline we could still see the room directory if we wanted. Of course federation isn't as useful for the "room directory space" but it doesn't hurt.23:41:59
@Las:matrix.orgLasTrue23:43:06
@kevincox:matrix.orgkevincox IDK. I'm not saying it is going to happen soon but I think logically the room directory and spaces do the same thing. There are some missing features for sure (like looking up a room by a short key like matrix-discussion:nixos.org) but I don't feel much fundamental differences. I kinda see the room directory as an unreplicated space with a funny API and hard-coded permissions 😛 I think it would be a nice refactoring to someday replace it with a proper space with default (but modifiable) permissions and standard APIs (with the old ones for compat). 23:46:34
@Las:matrix.orgLasAfter thinking about it for a bit I completely agree. A lot of the server directory specific APIs could be removed.23:52:58

@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyheh, are we going to end up brainstorming MSCs in here? :p04:54:53
