Las | Yes but spaces are federated, server directories aren't AFAICT. | 23:40:40 |
Las | Huge difference | 23:40:45 |
kevincox | That is another significant benefit of spaces over the room directory. If nixos.org dropped offline we could still see the room directory if we wanted. Of course federation isn't as useful for the "room directory space" but it doesn't hurt. | 23:41:59 |
Las | True | 23:43:06 |
kevincox | IDK. I'm not saying it is going to happen soon but I think logically the room directory and spaces do the same thing. There are some missing features for sure (like looking up a room by a short key like matrix-discussion:nixos.org) but I don't feel much fundamental differences. I kinda see the room directory as an unreplicated space with a funny API and hard-coded permissions π I think it would be a nice refactoring to someday replace it with a proper space with default (but modifiable) permissions and standard APIs (with the old ones for compat). | 23:46:34 |
Las | After thinking about it for a bit I completely agree. A lot of the server directory specific APIs could be removed. | 23:52:58 |

p10r | In reply to @rgrunbla:matrix.org I was wondering if a "Nix Radio" room would be a good idea. The main subject would be SDR and SDR related software inclusion in NixOS / nixpkgs, e.g. gnuradio, various gnuradio modules, drivers, and so on. There is a networking room and it appears to be exclusive for routers. I don't know enough about either routers or radios, but if there is enough overlap, perhaps they can accommodate? | 14:34:25 |
Alyssa Ross | I'm not sure the channel is supposed to be for routers only | 14:35:35 |
Alyssa Ross | the topic was copied from IRC, where it was #nixos-on-your-router, but IIRC it was renamed to reflect that it had come to be about networking more broadly | 14:36:01 |
hexa | It is for networking (L2-L4) I'd say | 14:53:14 |
hexa | maybe even L7 (dns, avahi) | 14:53:27 |
hexa | but sdr is imo out of scope | 14:53:34 |

nbathum (he or they) | colemickens π³οΈβπ: any favorites for learning more about matrix (as a user)? | 20:28:47 |
nbathum (he or they) | don't get me wrong, there is a certain thrill from reading a spec, but i just don't have that kind of time | 20:29:26 |
colemickens π³οΈβπ | I follow the "This Week In Matrix", sometimes watch the videos, mostly just skim the blog. It's a pretty good way to keep up to date, on clients, protocol changes, etc, without having to read the spec or follow GH. | 20:31:50 |
