Oh, I wasn't able to see this before. I was just looking at the new topic names and I personally think they are much better! I also like the separation of matrix discussion and matrix proposals.

So, yeah, I dunno, as I was saying in #matrix-suggestions:nixos.org , but should have said in here, I feel like the #nix:nixos.org is kind of being overused while others are underused. I feel like we should try to delegate more to the less-used rooms.

  1. A lot of people probably ignore that room because it gets such a huge amount of messages. This places an implicit labor asymmetry on a few members who monitor that room and are more dedicated to answering questions. It's working out okay, but I feel like it's suboptimal.
  2. It's easier for messages to get buried this way.

Points against:

  1. Could be really easy to take this too seriously and over-delegate, get into impossible arguments about what topic what statement is, etc.
  2. If it aint broke don't fix it?

Of ambiguous connotation:

  1. I believe part of the point of the #nix:nixos.org room is to create a clean delineation between help channel and discussion channels. There are some benefits to this, but also, learners can really drive discussions, while some of these rooms are sitting there nigh unused. Personally I don't think such a clear delineation exists in this case, or is as important as trying to manage the "load" on different rooms.

@aloisw:kde.org@aloisw:kde.orgAgainst: the more rooms there are, the more people are confused which one to use (recent activity in the "Nix Language" room you mentioned is half nixpkgs anyway)20:02:13
@lillecarl:matrix.org@lillecarl:matrix.orgI know some communities use channel channel1 channel2 channel3 channel4 channel5 They're all the same, except is splits the traffic for people having public discussions but can't follow along the one main channel20:04:26
@lillecarl:matrix.org@lillecarl:matrix.orgOne could argue that NixOS should implement Zulip or something that supports dynamic threads instead. The org can definitely host it 😄20:05:03

symys: It makes sense if you encourage public discussion, but the traffic is too high. Going private is "against FOSS"

Introducing another platform probably doesn't solve the Matrix problems, Discourse already exists.

True, but #flakes:nixos.org is very seldom used. Yet it's an area of much activity, confusion, and controversy - a literalish divide that makes people feel like they need to specify whether they're using flakes or not all the time.

@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezarius(I do am currently trying to explore a bridging solution with Zulip with proper puppeteering, though I cannot act without explicit permission from the moderation team for any official room),20:23:18

Deprecating one for another, matrix is pretty "bad" compared to centralised solutions (not fighting equal battles)

I can't view the message due to room permissions (I think).

You mean deprecating Matrix for Zulip? I don't know anything about Zulip yet, but that would probably be a very hard sell for me.
