While im all in for multilingual nix and international engagement and all that, i will say that i wonder how much time coverage do 2 users from norway have. The nice thing about having 10 mods all in different time zones is that you cover all different time zones. If you only have 2 people acting as liaison to the mod-team, what happens if those two people are asleep?

As a preface, I don't mean to invalidate the need for moderators. We all agree that's needed.

The way I read your message, it sounds to me like "if any channel doesn't have 24/7 moderation schedule, we should maybe not accept it into the nixos.org matrix space". If my understanding (which I've kind of exaggerated a little to make as clear as I could) is correct(ish), I wonder why this coverage is important?

If there is a channel that's more applicable to one (specific) non-English/Spanish/French, chances are that its use and "time of activity" will generally be limited to the timezone(s) used by the country of said language.

So, my counter-argument to your point (as I understood it) is that:

Are we sufficiently worried about non-policy-conforming activities occurring outside of "times of day" when people generally use a channel, that it's not okay to just remove/deal with it as soon as the timezone(s) this channel is active rolls around?

If so, why? Maybe the answer to why is a simple "because it doesn't look good if someone sees it before it's fixed". If it's that (and not something else), yeah I can see the need to demand sufficient moderators so that none of them would "have to get grumpy because they have to wake up in the middle of their night to fix things".

@eyjhb:eyjhb.dkeyJhbThe NixOS matrix space is scraped and have frequently been spammed with CSAM. Which I think is the reason why the need somewhat quick moderation is high. 07:23:18

@uep:matrix.orguepAny team or interest group (whether subject or locality or whatever-else) can create a channel and, assuming it's relevant, ask to have it added to the nix/os spaces. We need to add the moderation bot to the room, largely to take care of applying the shared ban lists and sometimes necessary interventions. We may leave the channel "founders" or team leads as local mods in the channel, to be used according to the team's preferences. That's not language specific. There are lots of language channels where the moderation team don't speak that language.07:24:38

Sounds both fair and like a very high bar of standard. Has this been written down somewhere? Maybe it should if it hasn't =)
07:25:12
@uep:matrix.orguepthat's not language specific, and is what the bot is for most of the time (we wish it could do better)07:25:35

I feel this just underlines my point of ratifying(?) / writing down this "bar of standard" =)
07:26:17
@eyjhb:eyjhb.dkeyJhbAgreed. But it's not always easy :) - Just trying to highlight, that getting a room added to the NixOS Space, might lead to an increase in spam.07:27:31

@uep:matrix.orguepit's covered. Thanks, but really, it's time to move on to another topic07:28:28

Thank you! I could not find any documentation on this when I looked for it, I'll have a read through and avoid re-iterating covered points =)
07:29:59
@uep:matrix.orguepit's well hidden! mostly because it was originally more an internal process for the steps to take07:31:15

Having skimmed through, what is it you think is a well covered point?

I'm asking with https://matrix.to/#/!GsmxjHfeAYLsTEQmjS:nixos.org/$HIiVVBJwXGv2Z2fF8cHs0gs4ux5E16pGSXZztnOpmtk?via=nixos.org&via=matrix.org&via=nixos.dev in mind

@uep:matrix.orguepbut, in short, the steps as already outlined in the initial conversation are what you need to do.. set up the room, make the request, and walk through the steps of adding the moderation bot and so on with us.07:32:59

All right, thanks, but has there maybe been a misunderstanding? My understanding was that the current topic of conversation was the question posed in the comment I linked, not " how to"
07:33:51
@uep:matrix.orguepyes, we already have other rooms where there are local mods as native speakers, and they (or anyone else in the room) can come to us for help.07:34:22
@uep:matrix.orguepI'm saying that there is no requirement for us in the mod team to speak all languages, or to restrict channels to use only languages in which the mod team is fluent.07:35:20
@uep:matrix.orguepif the channel gets large enough, we may recruit someone into the mod team, as we did earlier this year for the .cn conversations07:36:08
@uep:matrix.orgueptake a look at the nix RU channel, there are like 10 channel-local mods there07:38:05

Okay, gotcha. Just to confirm my understanding, you mean by this then that the alluded to need of 24/7 moderation is something that there can be leniency with for smaller/language specific channels? =)

That bit was not clear to me, you see 😅

07:38:14
@uep:matrix.orguep(as it happens we do have a russian speaker on the team, but that channel clearly needs some additional special management of its own for whatever reason)07:38:40

07:38:46
@uep:matrix.orguep"alluded to" is the issue07:41:41
@uep:matrix.orguepThe only 24/7 coverage is for the bot. We human members of the mod team try to do our best, but there's no on-call roster and shifts or anything like what was alluded to.07:45:53
@uep:matrix.orguepthere are somewhat over 180 channels monitored by the bot07:46:52
@uep:matrix.orguepNobody's reading all of that, no matter what language it's in. If there are issues, you'll need to bring it to our attention if they can't be resolved internally 07:47:52
@x10an14:matrix.org@x10an14:matrix.orgAll right! I understand your answer then to say that "best effort from human moderators as soon as they're aware to ie. remove CSAM" is consdered "good enough" for now, when it comes to applications of adding new channels to the nixos.org namespace =) Please correct me if I'm wrong =D07:48:04
@uep:matrix.orguepthe bot is currently set to remove all images posted, because of that. it's terribly inconvenient, but unfortunately necessary for now07:48:52
