@uep:matrix.orgueplook, if zulip is so successful that that happens organically, so be it11:15:11
@uep:matrix.orguepbut otherwise I think it's a long way down the list of objectives11:15:46
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyokay what I'm going to do is I'm going to make a unofficial test thing with the free cloud Zulip plan and poke at it. I think it wouldn't be possible to allow public access without poking Zulip about it for the FOSS plan but I'll at least figure out whether I buy my own bullshit advocating for testing it in the first place. who wants in?11:16:24
@emilazy:matrix.orgemily(esp. mod team members since knowing how well the tools there would work seems really important)11:16:37
@uep:matrix.orguep one of the other downsides for zulip vs matrix is that the client is per instance.. 11:17:15

In reply to @uep:matrix.org
look, if zulip is so successful that that happens organically, so be it
Would not hurt though, and probably if we get hundreds of users regularly using Zulip, we should talk to Zulip anyways ;)
11:17:17
@uep:matrix.orguepthat's the same as discourse.. it's a browser tab for every one11:17:34
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI think that's basically true of everything except Matrix and Discord11:17:37
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyand I doubt we're moving to Discord11:17:45
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyso yeah, sucks, but priced in11:17:48
@dylan:fdylan.co.ukDylanWhat I'm interested in is user provisioning? It seems oriented to teams and references guest users, can people just join or do they need to request an account?11:17:49
@uep:matrix.orgueprather than a chat window where I can have channels from many different things11:17:52
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilypeople can just join yeah. they have a public access feature11:17:58
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyyou need to make an account of course11:18:02
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyRust uses a public Zulip for dev11:18:09
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilCan create accounts with GitHub too fyi11:18:31
@emilazy:matrix.orgemily(for this test thing I'm unilaterally setting up I'd need to send out invites because the public access feature requires the upgraded plan I think. but presumably if it passes an initial sniff test then we can get the Foundation to ask for a test instance that has that plan.)11:19:01
@uep:matrix.orguepyeah, the rust one is my primary experience with zulip, and .. tbh i just kinda stopped looking regularly after a while11:19:26
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilWe can just invite whoever wants to test it to the existing instance that was used for governance before11:19:31
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilI can do that later11:19:54
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI feel like having to read those discussions is going to harsh the vibe :P11:20:32
@dylan:fdylan.co.ukDylanI see the mobile app only supports one zulip url 🙄11:20:48
@uep:matrix.orguepyeah I bounced off that hard and fast.11:20:49
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilythat was a very different structure of discussion to what we'd want from an ongoing NixOS chat instance11:20:50
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilWe can archive those too :P11:21:04
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilBut yeah11:21:13
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI think we'd really want a public test instance if we seriously consider this11:21:35
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilI've also had some PTSD from Zulip, but I've gotten over it by using it more 😅11:21:42
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilypresumably a public test instance that could just become the actual instance11:21:47
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilybecause onboarding is part of the question11:21:59
