@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyself-hosted we get access to their push notifications for $0 because FOSS11:12:49
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilycloud we get standard plan for $0 because FOSS11:12:54
@dylan:fdylan.co.ukDylanhttps://zulip.com/plans/#self-hosted11:12:56
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI have read the pages you are linking to11:13:01
@dylan:fdylan.co.ukDylanDidn't know about the FOSS exception11:13:07
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilythe server is FOSS11:13:07
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilythe paid self-hosted stuff is for their push notifications server and support11:13:14
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilywe would want push, but it's free for FOSS anyway11:13:22
@dylan:fdylan.co.ukDylanStill, putting all the eggs in one basket essentially11:13:31
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI mean, it's putting one egg (mobile push notifications) in that basket11:13:49
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyif Zulip went evil then yeah we'd have to figure out a way to publish an app with push notification support11:14:01
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyif Element went evil we would also basically lose push notifications in practice11:14:10
@dylan:fdylan.co.ukDylanI mean in regards to the content, right now if element 'went evil' we can still use discourse11:14:22
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyeven with a cloud option there is full data import/export… I think it is much better than something like Slack for these concerns11:14:23
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyoh well sure11:14:29
@emilazy:matrix.orgemily I think infinisil might be the only person wh owants to replace Discourse though :P 11:14:38
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI certainly didn't intend to propose that11:14:47
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilAs a foundation board member, I'd be interested in establishing some partnership with Zulip to have better continuity assurance11:14:49
@uep:matrix.orgueplook, if zulip is so successful that that happens organically, so be it11:15:11
@uep:matrix.orguepbut otherwise I think it's a long way down the list of objectives11:15:46
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyokay what I'm going to do is I'm going to make a unofficial test thing with the free cloud Zulip plan and poke at it. I think it wouldn't be possible to allow public access without poking Zulip about it for the FOSS plan but I'll at least figure out whether I buy my own bullshit advocating for testing it in the first place. who wants in?11:16:24
@emilazy:matrix.orgemily(esp. mod team members since knowing how well the tools there would work seems really important)11:16:37
@uep:matrix.orguep one of the other downsides for zulip vs matrix is that the client is per instance.. 11:17:15
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisil
In reply to @uep:matrix.org
look, if zulip is so successful that that happens organically, so be it
Would not hurt though, and probably if we get hundreds of users regularly using Zulip, we should talk to Zulip anyways ;)
