What alternatives
I assume Slack mainly and perhaps Zulip Chat and perhaps even mailing lists
13:40:25
@k900:0upti.meK900 Slack is a silo, Zulip is a semi-silo and has some really weird commercial licensing terms, mailing lists will make half the community quit instantly 13:41:12

I'm just thinking, it can't be intended behavior. Thanks for engaging with me on this line of inquiry.

it can't be intended behavior.

I second this, I don't even see the "Nix Audio" and "Nix / NixOS (replaced)" rooms within the Nix space on my client.

Is it really the intended behavior to stop?* every N messages and recreate the room?

  • I don't know the correct term

The intended behavior is to not have servers roll back persistent state

I wasn't making a suggestion to switch but trying to expand on the alternatives

13:44:53
@k900:0upti.meK900Alternatives that we can't switch to aren't particularly interesting13:45:18

I don't quite get this, are there resources I can look into about this?
I have a work team setup on Matrix and it's my first time seeing this behavior live, so I'd appreciate it if you could give me some resources for me to read further into it

@k900:0upti.meK900The reason all the rooms are breaking is that the nixos.org server had an account and all associated data manually deleted from the database13:46:22
@k900:0upti.meK900Which is not something you should normally do, ever13:46:30
@k900:0upti.meK900And not really something the protocol is equipped to handle13:47:07

How even... yeah this is not something that would normally happen. Thank you for the clarification
13:48:59
@k900:0upti.meK900That server was hosted by EMS, which is Element's SaaS offering, and some people had accounts on it, including moderators that set up the rooms13:49:55
@k900:0upti.meK900And when the server was migrated to NixOS owned infra, they had to delete those for privacy reasons13:50:23
@k900:0upti.meK900 The expectation was that preserving some state was better than starting from scratch 13:52:02
@k900:0upti.meK900And that turned out to not really be the case13:52:13
@adham-omran:matrix.org@adham-omran:matrix.orgWas there any announcement about this?13:52:28
@k900:0upti.meK900Not really?13:52:43
@k900:0upti.meK900Why would there be one?13:52:45
@k900:0upti.meK900The rooms mostly got fixed13:52:54
@k900:0upti.meK900And the people that had accounts on the nixos.org server were obviously made aware13:53:03
@k900:0upti.meK900Most people shouldn't have noticed anything13:53:16

from what I see this migration hasn't happened yet, EMS still hosts the matrix server for nixos.org
13:55:00
@k900:0upti.meK900Yes, the actual switchover is not done yet13:55:22
@k900:0upti.meK900But they did delete the accounts13:55:26
@adham-omran:matrix.org@adham-omran:matrix.org

The rooms mostly got fixed
The mostly is why I would have liked an announcement or info, the Nix Audio channel as you probably know got restarted
14:10:36
@k900:0upti.meK900I don't know why the room was recreated 14:10:54
@k900:0upti.meK900It shouldn't have been 14:10:57
@k900:0upti.meK900And if it was, the old room should have been tombstoned14:11:12
