| Any team or interest group (whether subject or locality or whatever-else) can create a channel and, assuming it's relevant, ask to have it added to the nix/os spaces. We need to add the moderation bot to the room, largely to take care of applying the shared ban lists and sometimes necessary interventions. We may leave the channel "founders" or team leads as local mods in the channel, to be used according to the team's preferences. That's not language specific. There are lots of language channels where the moderation team don't speak that language. | 07:24:38 | |
In reply to @eyjhb:eyjhb.dkSounds both fair and like a very high bar of standard. Has this been written down somewhere? Maybe it should if it hasn't =) | 07:25:12
| that's not language specific, and is what the bot is for most of the time (we wish it could do better) | 07:25:35 | |
In reply to @uep:matrix.orgI feel this just underlines my point of ratifying(?) / writing down this "bar of standard" =) | 07:26:17
| Agreed. But it's not always easy :) - Just trying to highlight, that getting a room added to the NixOS Space, might lead to an increase in spam. | 07:27:31 | |

| it's covered. Thanks, but really, it's time to move on to another topic | 07:28:28 | |
In reply to @uep:matrix.orgThank you! I could not find any documentation on this when I looked for it, I'll have a read through and avoid re-iterating covered points =) | 07:29:59
| it's well hidden! mostly because it was originally more an internal process for the steps to take | 07:31:15 | |
In reply to @uep:matrix.org Having skimmed through, what is it you think is a well covered point? I'm asking with https://matrix.to/#/!GsmxjHfeAYLsTEQmjS:nixos.org/$HIiVVBJwXGv2Z2fF8cHs0gs4ux5E16pGSXZztnOpmtk?via=nixos.org&via=matrix.org&via=nixos.dev in mind | 07:32:21
| but, in short, the steps as already outlined in the initial conversation are what you need to do.. set up the room, make the request, and walk through the steps of adding the moderation bot and so on with us. | 07:32:59 | |
In reply to @uep:matrix.orgAll right, thanks, but has there maybe been a misunderstanding? My understanding was that the current topic of conversation was the question posed in the comment I linked, not " how to" | 07:33:51
| yes, we already have other rooms where there are local mods as native speakers, and they (or anyone else in the room) can come to us for help. | 07:34:22 | |
| I'm saying that there is no requirement for us in the mod team to speak all languages, or to restrict channels to use only languages in which the mod team is fluent. | 07:35:20 | |
| if the channel gets large enough, we may recruit someone into the mod team, as we did earlier this year for the .cn conversations | 07:36:08 | |
| take a look at the nix RU channel, there are like 10 channel-local mods there | 07:38:05 | |
In reply to @uep:matrix.org Okay, gotcha. Just to confirm my understanding, you mean by this then that the alluded to need of 24/7 moderation is something that there can be leniency with for smaller/language specific channels? =) That bit was not clear to me, you see 😅 | 07:38:14
| (as it happens we do have a russian speaker on the team, but that channel clearly needs some additional special management of its own for whatever reason) | 07:38:40 | |
