One thing I will note is that Steam's stdout/stderr in a terminal shows this:

Vulkan missing requested extension 'VK_KHR_surface'.
Vulkan missing requested extension 'VK_KHR_xlib_surface'.
BInit - Unable to initialize Vulkan!
set VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/run/opengl-driver/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.x86_64.json before launching Steam and see if that fixes it

(I'm not suggesting using this as a permanent fix, I'm just suggesting testing with it to diagnose the real problem)

@slabity:matrix.org@slabity:matrix.orgNah, I think that's a red herring now. Honestly it kind of seems random. Most of the time it fails and then it randomly succeeds. I get that message even on success18:31:13

I just remember fixing that...
20:01:42
@pimeys:beeper.compimeyssomething in here https://git.sr.ht/~pimeys/nixos/tree/plasma/item/desktop/default.nix#L6320:03:31
@pimeys:beeper.compimeysadding the vulkan stuff explicitly fixed it20:03:41
@pimeys:beeper.compimeysat least validation layers and extension layer20:03:54
@slabity:matrix.org@slabity:matrix.orgYea, that env variable does not get rid of the Vulkan errors on Steam.20:04:13
@pimeys:beeper.compimeysalso remember if you recently upgraded your kernel to reboot20:04:46
@slabity:matrix.org@slabity:matrix.org Wait, are the vulkan-* packages not part of the opengl setup? 20:04:49
@pimeys:beeper.compimeysyeah I found that from some issue20:05:02
@pimeys:beeper.compimeysit's a bit weird but this fixed it for me20:05:07
@slabity:matrix.org@slabity:matrix.orgYea, I tried a fresh restart as well20:05:16
@slabity:matrix.org@slabity:matrix.orgThe odd thing is that sometimes it fails, sometimes it works, and sometimes it works but it won't let me open up the friends-list or other things.20:05:41

@k900:0upti.meK900That is definitely not necessary21:03:27
@k900:0upti.meK900Definitely not vulkan-loaders21:03:29
@k900:0upti.meK900Possibly the validation layers catch some API misuse21:03:37
@k900:0upti.meK900But even that is ehhh21:03:40
@k900:0upti.meK900vulkan-extension-layer shouldn't do anything on any Mesa driver as they already implement all the extensions it provides natively21:04:23
@slabity:matrix.org@slabity:matrix.orgWhat I'm curious about is how many people are experiencing this issue. I literally cleaned my entire Steam installation and problem persisted so I'm very curious what's different on my end that is causing this.21:14:05
@multisn8:matrix.org@multisn8:matrix.org(fwiw haven't gotten anything like this using the proprietary Nvidia driver and a clean-slate install recently)21:30:10

@miyoku157:matrix.orgmiyoku157Hi, I'm doing a setup for multiple users. And I have a question about something i didn't find. I try to set Hyprland as WM for me and KDE for the second user. I thought doing that thanks to the home-manager; but i must say i don't really have example of how to do it. Do you have idea of how to do that? And also, I'm used to the console, move through linux, but the other user not at all (that's why i'm setting a easier WM) but he's also a gamer. Is KDE a good choice for that? or is it to greedy in performance (in general i help to setup the game with wine or proton). Do you have any advice for the WM?17:24:28
