In reply to @sternenseemann:systemli.org
unfortunately the GHC build fails at the very end, so it's gonna be a pain to fix
wish nix had a better story for this. I guess you could use --keep-build-dir or whatever it is?

@sternenseemann:systemli.orgsterni (he/him)yeah, but reproducing the build env faithfully is not easy09:48:55
@sternenseemann:systemli.orgsterni (he/him)since nix-shell is different in subtle ways09:49:07
@joe:monoid.aljoe (he/him)I feel you]09:49:37
@joe:monoid.aljoe (he/him) * I feel you09:49:38

@sternenseemann:systemli.orgsterni (he/him)https://gitlab.haskell.org/ghc/ghc/-/commit/ec451cac39de919621c783fec809c26fb9f0d1c8 okay this is the culprit, not too bad09:50:01
@sternenseemann:systemli.orgsterni (he/him)also I think I have actually experienced https://gitlab.haskell.org/ghc/ghc/-/issues/9221 now09:50:46
@sternenseemann:systemli.orgsterni (he/him)meaning when I build GHC on my server which has like a 2012 desktop PC CPU GHC builds faster than on whatever hydra was throwing it on09:51:23
@sternenseemann:systemli.orgsterni (he/him)🤠👍09:51:37

@sternenseemann:systemli.orgsterni (he/him) siraben: are you among the M1 owners btw 10:15:25

@siraben:matrix.orgsirabenLate 2013 hehe10:15:48
@sternenseemann:systemli.orgsterni (he/him)that's almost as old as my mac10:16:12
@siraben:matrix.orgsirabenwhich year is yours from?10:16:43
@sternenseemann:systemli.orgsterni (he/him)2012 or 2011 I think10:25:08
@sternenseemann:systemli.orgsterni (he/him) greaaaat so fixing GHC on darwin involves checks notes packaging an Apple fork of a python library / tool 10:25:30
@siraben:matrix.orgsiraben sterni (he/him): do builds take a while for you as well on darwin? 10:26:28
@siraben:matrix.orgsirabenI guess we run older machines but on linux it feels a lot faster10:26:36
@vaibhavsagar:matrix.orgvaibhavsagar joined the room.10:28:58
@sternenseemann:systemli.orgsterni (he/him)never compared on the same machine10:37:22
@sternenseemann:systemli.orgsterni (he/him)but darwin GHC takes for ever10:37:26
@pwmosquito:matrix.orgpwmosquito sterni (he/him) maralorn at our company quite a few people already work on M1s and over time more will follow. If it's helpful for you I think I can arrange a dedicated M1 mac mini for you to build on. What do you think? 11:51:00
@maralorn:maralorn.demaralorn pwmosquito: I’m sorry, but I don‘t have enough spare time to maintain platforms I don‘t use. 11:54:48
