@timdeh:matrix.org | I see no problem with master, but I initially tried to skirt the controversy all together when I started with core. I think the politically charged motivations for changing everything to main are kinda stupid and I never would have done so myself, but somebody went under my nose π
In any case, master is more in line with virtually every other project in the Nix community, so that would be my vote.

Pacman99 | It seems wrong to just assume people are offended by the term master, a name that is used in many other ways. Also seems like github is trying to virtue signal with the widespread name change. But I do kind of like main better simply because its easier to type and it is more descriptive of the branches purpose. | 18:50:46 |
Pacman99 | I do agree with you in that devos's master branch should not have been renamed without any discussion with you and other contributors. | 18:52:41 |
@timdeh:matrix.org | I have no objection to the name main itself, my chief objection could probably be summed up in this brilliant quote:
βThe simple step of a courageous individual is not to take part in the lie. "One word of truth outweighs the world.β β Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn

@timdeh:matrix.org | * In case someone wonders exactly what I mean by that, the shift to main is not about compassion or offense, that is a lie. | 19:17:50 |
@kraftnix:matrix.org | the quiet shift to main definitely caused me some confusion (and an eyeroll) at the time while I was wondering why there had been no new commits in a few weeks, and i still have some branch mismatches on some machines i should cleanup.
i don't really care overall but i agree that devos and digga should have the same (and perhaps also be aligned with other nix projects). | 22:44:08 |

David Arnold (blaggacao) | git 's builtin default will eventually change (to main ?). I made the change to main , but for no political reason whatsoever. π | 13:02:30 |
David Arnold (blaggacao) | An a-political main looks beautiful. So using it a-politically os a statement of aesthetics by itself. ππ | 13:03:35 |

David Arnold (blaggacao) | If it was an undesired change, then I guess it can be seen colateral damage of progress at that time when I was still able to pushing things forward more vividly. | 13:05:57 |

ultranix | i dont like a political ideology enforced upon my code so i stick with master too | 14:35:56 |
ultranix | give them one step and they take 20 | 14:36:28 |
yusdacra | I don't have a problem with main or any default branch name, so the change is fine by me. The discussion should only be over what the change is shown as (by propagators of the change), which doesn't matter in this case (and is not the topic of this room anyways) | 15:00:46 |
Pacman99 | Idk how to do polls in matrix, but we should just do a vote and agree to abide by the result of the vote. I don't think a discussion about naming is going to get us anywhere or change any minds. | 15:39:53 |
@timdeh:matrix.org | if there is no way on matrix I'm sure we can find some tool to assist us... | 15:46:41 |
[0x4A6F] | You could ask the question and list items in following messages and people should vote by +1 their desired item. | 16:02:01 |
