@Minijackson:matrix.orgMinijacksonI don't know much about reaper, but you might want to enable the jack compatibility module in pipewire19:43:06

I haven't found that many bugs in Carla so far, I plan on using it to make some live music, and I prefer launching something smaller than Ardour for this kind of setup
Maybe I should actually report the bugs instead of just complaining about them 🥴

@fractivore:cyberia.clubsymysI've had an issue where it forgets which synth presets I'm using if I close the file, regardless of save state. Kind of a deal breaker. But I almost always have ardour open anyway when I'm going audio, so I decided to just use that even though it's overkill for quite a few cases. Fortunately I haven't had too many issues with Ardour's memory usage or anything.11:58:01

I found out that my main problem was usbguard 🤣
lol I had a fun problem once where usbguard was on by default and I created a portable iso and put it on a USB drive, boot went fine until systemd-units started then suddenly the filesystem froze, go figure

@ThorHop:matrix.orgIdeallyYesI've tried both PipeWire proper (in fact both Reaper and Bitwig support PipeWire out of the box) and jackd compatibility layer. I think I'd prefer the jackd compatibility for now. Seems jackd compatibility even got better with 1.0. But my laptop is a crusty Lenovo Yoga, so... yeah..22:01:04

@ThorHop:matrix.orgIdeallyYesIn regards to diminishing returns for audio processing, what workstation grade or server grade system is sort of the "limit" before it can't push the buffer any harder? I'm wondering if you could run say iZotope Ozone "real-time" with a Threadripper or EPYC processor, with processing to spare, using a workstation/server grade CPU from a few generations ago. This is unfortunately for a Windows system :/ since it needs to run something that is only available on Mac or on Windows, which means finding some Windows Enterprise license to open up all them cores, but still.22:49:48

What needs windows to run?
19:00:43
@fractivore:cyberia.clubsymysIf it doesn't support Linux or any free OS, it's garbage software IMO.19:02:36
@fractivore:cyberia.clubsymysI would be willing to help you find a substitute tool that will work on NixOS or Linux.19:03:35
@fractivore:cyberia.clubsymysBut I do not have any idea about the answer to your actual question, since I stopped using windows for audio at all a couple years back.19:04:58
@fractivore:cyberia.clubsymysIt wasn't exactly an easy switch, and kept me on windows for a while after I started using Linux for everything else, so I feel your pain.19:22:28
@ThorHop:matrix.orgIdeallyYes symys I've tried running Ableton Live via WineASIO, but PipeWire just ain't there yet and I am sort of reliant upon certain software... reliant? No. I absolfrigginlutely LOVE Ableton Live. I'm not leaving it for anything, and there really is no open source alternative. Btw, I use this rig LIVE and not just in private, and also in collaboration with others. So that means I can't just jump over to Bitwig, mostly because Bitwig is... a bit messy imho and isn't at all that great for sampling :/ But yeah, 20:07:04
@ThorHop:matrix.orgIdeallyYes However... I suspect that the Ableton Push 3 (standalone music workstation) not only runs Linux... but NixOS... 20:07:38
@ThorHop:matrix.orgIdeallyYesSo in the future, if I could have Push 3 standalone, coupled with Bitwig for mixing, as well as managing MIDI devices, a 16ch audio interface and get me more overhead? Yes please.20:08:30
@ThorHop:matrix.orgIdeallyYesBut - that - was - not - the - question.20:08:42
@ThorHop:matrix.orgIdeallyYesIt needs to be Windows, because my benchmark is: can you run iZotope Ozone live?20:09:06
