@lennart:0520.chlennart* Mark Shuttleworth's decisions should not be the standard (I am joking, lets to Z to A)07:59:28

@vcunat:matrix.orgvcunatIf someone comes with a different sensible proposal, why not discuss it 🤷08:00:21
@grimmauld:m.grimmauld.deGrimmauld (any/all)Vicuna was already broken in boot screens because unicode. Can we stick to latin alphabet please?12:21:35
@sigmasquadron:matrix.orgSigmaSquadronnumbers13:45:32
@sigmasquadron:matrix.orgSigmaSquadronwe can scale to infinity that way13:45:52
@vcunat:matrix.orgvcunatWe have floats already, e.g. 25.11 now 😉13:46:59
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilThere is only one correct answer:21:58:53

@hexa:lossy.networkhexawe had Aa already with 13.10 😬22:02:16
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilCould do https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aardwolf :P22:11:12
@leona:leona.isleonaI hope the RM with XX is a animal researcher then ^^ I don’t think there’s an animal starting with Xx yet22:12:55
@hexa:lossy.networkhexaAard means Earth, so nah 😄 22:13:00
@hexa:lossy.networkhexadon't think we need to go that far22:13:41
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilSerious suggestion: Celestial objects. Moons, planets, stars, galaxies, nebulas, etc.22:13:45
@hexa:lossy.networkhexayeah, and follow a direction22:13:56
@hexa:lossy.networkhexaless of a choice and more like a path travelled 22:14:56
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilMight be too restrictive, most celestial objects don't have nice names, like X Æ A-1222:16:30
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilOh wait22:16:51
@hexa:lossy.networkhexa that's so judgy of you 22:17:27
@leona:leona.isleonaThere are very many minor planets22:17:36
@leona:leona.isleona(that's my current naming schema for infra)22:17:46
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilAnother serious suggestion: Geographical features, like vulcanos, mountains, caverns, lakes, deserts, etc.22:20:59
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilAnd another one: Historically significant figures, like researchers, explorers, etc. Could show off people that should be more well known for the cool things they did22:22:44
@qyliss:fairydust.spaceAlyssa Rosspeople in history can be a bit messy. brings morality issues into play a lot more than animals, galaxies, etc.22:24:49
@scrumplex:duckhub.ioScrumplexCan't wait for Kuwubernetes but NixOS22:34:22

In reply to @qyliss:fairydust.space
people in history can be a bit messy. brings morality issues into play a lot more than animals, galaxies, etc.
Same for place names. Like, the only safe place name to pick would be places in international waters and the Antarctic. Once you start naming a release "Yellowstone" or something, things get really messy.

@grimmauld:m.grimmauld.deGrimmauld (any/all)I think there is a couple aspects to watch out for. I am not sure what the best answer is, but I'll list what I think is needed for a naming scheme22:47:51
@sigmanificient:matrix.orgSigmanificientWe are moving out of animals names?22:48:15
@grimmauld:m.grimmauld.deGrimmauld (any/all)
  • Latin alphabet: a technical limitation, we want boot names to display it correctly. No Unicode.
  • "Neutral" names. We want everyone to identify with a release, or at least not be alienated by a name.
  • memorable names. Just a number is not super memorable. It works, but then we wouldn't need code names at all.
  • clear ordering. Lexicographic ordering is good, because it is obvious. Distances of celestial bodies would not be immediately obvious.
