Hello all, the release is approaching and lennart and me are working on the release notes. I filed an issue describing the outline change we plan to apply so you can more easily provide feedback if you feel to strongly against the changes before we put too much effort into it: https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/270257.
infinisil: raitobezarius figsoda , just in case, I also pinged you on the issue

@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisil alejandrosame: Thanks! Left a comment in the issue 21:20:52

@hexa:lossy.networkhexa NixOS when? 03:57:03
@lennart:0520.chlennartwhat would be the timeframe for such a change?03:58:12
@lennart:0520.chlennartlosing myself with the release notes editing sometimes, and finding myself here for example :D https://oracle-base.com/blog/2015/01/02/a-sql-or-an-sql/04:10:35

I'd still wait
06:46:20
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusWayland is not a full replacement for some usecases06:46:29
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusBut we can probably tuck Xorg to become the minority of our usecases 06:46:43
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezarius we should probably prepare a LWN short post for the release figsoda FYI 07:06:23
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusI can take care of this if you want07:06:27
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariussomeday we will have our guest article if I can find a good writer07:06:40
@adam:robins.wtfadamcstephens Red Hat’s timelines allow Wayland to not be perfect for release adoption. The post even says you should stay on EL9 if you need Xorg   12:56:18
@adam:robins.wtfadamcstephens They have probably until the release of EL11 in 5-6 years to fill the gaps 12:59:22

they probably only support GNOME 🙂
13:51:38
@hexa:lossy.networkhexait is where they invest developer resources after all13:51:48
@hexa:lossy.networkhexaso killing xorg is easier when you don't care about the diversity of window/deskopmanagers13:52:09
@vcunat:matrix.orgvcunatI suspect it's mainly about them not wanting to officially support X, i.e. solve people's issues with it.13:53:33
@vcunat:matrix.orgvcunatBy which I mean that we have lots of stuff in nixpkgs that isn't really supported by anyone, but it's still there and it often works.13:54:54

that would be awesome, thanks!

@lennart:0520.chlennart hi infinisil, we would like to drop the trunk-ng package announcement from the Release Notes. such announcements were not done before, but it's added to the New Services section for now. alejandrosame remembered that you kinda wanted it in the Notes though. there were like 16k of new packages added to NixOS 23.05. we would be highlighting such numbers in the announcement, but not individual packages in the Release Notes. OK? 15:23:29
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisil lennart: Sounds good to me! 15:27:19
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilIt would be great to have an overview of new packages in the future, but that would take some time to create15:27:48

@lennart:0520.chlennartWe could ask the search time for such a feature maybe? Meaning search.nixos.org15:30:28

@hexa:lossy.networkhexa16000 new packages between 23.05 and 23.11?17:48:27
@hexa:lossy.networkhexaI have a hard time believing that number17:48:32
