Paul Meyer (katexochen) | Hey, I've noticed that in the current state, the PR template is a bit confusing, as it still points to the previous release notes after the branch-off. Currently, when opening a PR with breaking changes that won't be backported, the template suggests to update release notes of 23.11. I've found that the PR template will be updated as part of the final release step, see https://nixos.github.io/release-wiki/Final-Release.html#on-the-master-branch. Any objections moving this to the branch-off step (https://nixos.github.io/release-wiki/Branch-Off.html#back-on-the-master-branch) for the future? | 16:49:58 |
figsoda | I think it makes more sense to be part of branch-off, I will submit a PR | 16:52:04 |

@alejandrosame:matrix.org | Hello all, the release is approaching and lennart and me are working on the release notes. I filed an issue describing the outline change we plan to apply so you can more easily provide feedback if you feel to strongly against the changes before we put too much effort into it: https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/270257. | 21:00:14 |
@alejandrosame:matrix.org | That change is orthogonal to actual editing of the text, which @lennart has already done a bunch and won't be lost regardles of the outline change. | 21:01:01 |

hexa | NixOS when? | 03:57:03 |
lennart | what would be the timeframe for such a change? | 03:58:12 |
lennart | losing myself with the release notes editing sometimes, and finding myself here for example :D https://oracle-base.com/blog/2015/01/02/a-sql-or-an-sql/ | 04:10:35 |
raitobezarius | In reply to @hexa:lossy.network https://www.redhat.com/de/blog/rhel-10-plans-wayland-and-xorg-server I'd still wait | 06:46:20 |
raitobezarius | Wayland is not a full replacement for some usecases | 06:46:29 |
raitobezarius | But we can probably tuck Xorg to become the minority of our usecases | 06:46:43 |
raitobezarius | we should probably prepare a LWN short post for the release figsoda FYI | 07:06:23 |
raitobezarius | I can take care of this if you want | 07:06:27 |
raitobezarius | someday we will have our guest article if I can find a good writer | 07:06:40 |
adamcstephens | Red Hat’s timelines allow Wayland to not be perfect for release adoption. The post even says you should stay on EL9 if you need Xorg | 12:56:18 |
adamcstephens | They have probably until the release of EL11 in 5-6 years to fill the gaps | 12:59:22 |
hexa | In reply to @raitobezarius:matrix.org I'd still wait they probably only support GNOME 🙂 | 13:51:38 |
hexa | it is where they invest developer resources after all | 13:51:48 |
hexa | so killing xorg is easier when you don't care about the diversity of window/deskopmanagers | 13:52:09 |
Vladimír Čunát | I suspect it's mainly about them not wanting to officially support X, i.e. solve people's issues with it. | 13:53:33 |
