jasi 🏳️⚧️ | It'd be better if the GLF folks contributed to upstream NixOS rather than creating their own thing. | 19:47:45 |
jasi 🏳️⚧️ | Like making NixOS more accessible to a french speaking audience is objectively good, but maybe contribute to the NixOS wiki first or make a pamphlet rather than an entire distribution. | 19:48:52 |
jasi 🏳️⚧️ | Also they have things like "doing this as a challenge" | 19:51:04 |
jasi 🏳️⚧️ | Not what you want to hear when you're trusting an operating system | 19:51:52 |

jasi 🏳️⚧️ | This isn't specific to NixOS either, Arch has the same issue where there are downstream distributions that are glorified installers (all of which got invalidated by archinstall when it became mature).
I mean don't get me started on "Manjaro"

davidak | a nixos distribution could just be a profile inside nixpkgs that people can use as a starting point. what you get using the graphical installer is similar. you can just select the desktop instead of us having to maintain multiple distributions like Ubuntu | 16:27:24 |
Albert | ^ Why I adore NixOS so much | 16:28:50 |
Albert | All my machines are in a single flake.
Some run KDE, some run Hyprland, some have containers and run Docker, others run HAProxy and Wireguard. | 16:29:27 |
Albert | It's great. All from one flake! | 16:29:39 |
davidak | What do you all think about the optimizations of CachyOS, especially the BORE Scheduler and LTO kernel? Could we use that on NixOS? | 16:36:01 |
K900 | Do you have evidence that it actually helps anything? | 16:36:39 |
davidak | no, but i'm interested | 16:37:02 |
K900 | Well I'll start being interested when there's any evidence it actually helps anything | 16:37:41 |
davidak | i used it for some days while the game i wanted to play crashed on nixos. but then it broke and did not boot anymore | 16:37:53 |
davidak | what metric would you care about? a higher frame rate would be obvious, but i think a more stable frame time would be most valuable for a better experience | 16:42:20 |
K900 | Any metric | 16:44:10 |
K900 | That is reasonably useful | 16:44:14 |
Marie | 0001-asus.patch is my favorite feature of cachyos | 16:44:54 |
Linux DADDY | Can you use this in nixos? | 16:52:31 |
davidak | sure | 16:52:41 |
davidak | it's pretty easy to patch the kernel on nixos
https://codeberg.org/davidak/webseite/issues/85 | 16:54:34 |
K900 | That was a joke | 16:54:46 |
K900 | CachyOS is well known for having giant entirely undocumented patches in their kernel packaging | 16:55:01 |
Charles | if only this would stop social media people from recommending it | 16:56:35 |
Linux DADDY | I've used normal proton ge and cachyos's proton v4, i would say it's more optimized than normal one, I actually used chaotic's cachyos-proton-x64-v4, which worked for one game by default which non other proton versions able to run, And i don't know how i broke it, will try tomorrow again. | 16:58:11 |
Linux DADDY | But when i install cachyos's proton version from protonplus even if it's new it is not working anymore.
But after install the chaotic's cachyos-proton-v4 and copying the path into heroic directory now it is not working and heroic says "wine invalid path" i can't even remember how i was made it work, any help or suggestion would be appreciated. | 17:00:37 |
