Atemu | You might want a second "monitor" via dummy plug then | 17:25:41 |
Sandro 🐧 | I have that, it behaves the same | 17:26:57 |
Sandro 🐧 | I suspect I need to disable power features for it 🤔🤔 | 17:27:09 |
Sandro 🐧 | I need to take a closer look at that later | 17:27:19 |
| @steeringwheelrules:tchncs.de left the room. | 18:12:19 |

9lore | Anyone else having issue with steam not starting anymore recently without any error msg (not even in terminal stdout/stderr) | 01:58:35 |
niklaskorz | no | 11:38:40 |
niklaskorz | In reply to @niklaskorz:matrix.org And yeah Cosmic is doing the same unfortunately After running cosmic for the first time since February, I'm delighted to see they've added a third mode that behaves like kwin6's "let the application scale itself" 🎊 | 11:55:34 |
niklaskorz | So the default is still what most compositors have been doing for years, then there is a mode that behaves like Gnome Mutter's "X11 native scaling", and yet another that behaves like KDE's "X11 native scaling" | 11:56:34 |
Atemu | How is cosmic for gaming these days? | 13:19:29 |
Atemu | Does it implement VRR and stuff? | 13:19:42 |
Atemu | The only compositor to implement that halfway decently is kwin unfortunately | 13:20:18 |
niklaskorz | it does now yeah! | 13:42:07 |
niklaskorz | only thing missing for me is HDR | 13:42:10 |
niklaskorz | then it's pretty much on par with kwin6 | 13:42:16 |
niklaskorz | but afaik HDR is on the post-1.0 roadmap | 13:42:38 |
niklaskorz | I have yet to try how reliably VRR works, might do that later | 13:43:04 |
Atemu | Does LFC work properly? Like, with cursors and such? | 13:44:59 |
niklaskorz | I do not know what LFC stands for and neither does the internet, apparently | 13:49:11 |
ghpzin | Low Framerate Compensation | 14:26:06 |
Atemu | When FPS is <1/2 the refresh rate, the frame gets re-displayed n times which allows VRR with FPS below the minimum refresh rate and has latency benefits | 14:32:19 |
Atemu | This is usually not implemented or poorly implemented, especially when you move the cursor (visible or not) | 14:32:59 |
niklaskorz | oh TIL, thx! | 14:44:47 |
niklaskorz | only mention of that is in this issue: | 14:45:27 |
niklaskorz | https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-comp/issues/1152#issuecomment-2593743026 | 14:45:28 |
niklaskorz |
Cosmic explicitly queries and tracks the lowest possible refresh rate of the display, so we don't run into Low-Framerate-Compensation, which will double the framerate quickly and thus cause flickering.
| 14:45:33 |
Atemu | Oof, that's wrong in many ways; I'll chime in with that info | 15:07:24 |
niklaskorz | on an unrelated note, I'm surprised to see that gamescope session apparently works without issues on Nvidia nowadays | 16:14:50 |
niklaskorz | (at least I did not encounter any in my quick testing just now) | 16:15:06 |
niklaskorz | and that also made me discover opengamepadui because that shows up in the NixOS options when searching for gamescopeSession | 16:16:34 |
