Tammi (ey/em) | In reply to @woobilicious:matrix.org okay it's failing in clone3 hmmno clue where to start debugging this lol can u get kdumps? | 10:30:31 |
woobilicious | I'll have a look in to it | 10:42:07 |
Tammi (ey/em) | those are not enabled by default. it requires the option boot.crashDump.enable which usually triggers a custom kernel build.
kdumps can then be loaded for example using Crash utility given that you can also provide an appropriate vmlinux.
it's useful if you want someone else to debug kernel issues but takes a bit of effort to setup | 10:51:05 |
woobilicious | oh it's perf tool in userspace, older vervions don't crash on this kernel. | 10:55:50 |
woobilicious | Tammi (ey/em): I'm unfamiliar with how perf is built and selected based on which kernel I'm running, but It does seem to be a recent regression. | 10:58:15 |
Tammi (ey/em) | ohhh | 10:58:38 |

woobilicious | interesting, nothing too crazy, just good engineering, similar to lmdb I guess, which is probably a little faster because it dosesn't do any networking. I do wonder what a query looks like, and if there are downsides to the the schema. like knowning your account balance would be O(n)? Also the cluster similator video game is hilarious, So many bugs and cheating in video games could be solved with principled transanctional designs...lol | 23:41:10 |
woobilicious | wait...can't you just acheive 90% of this using SQL with a similar schema? the self-healing aspect seems like the only novel feature.
Talking about self healing...nix-store probably needs some protections for io errors lol | 23:51:30 |

Mic92 | I think also the fact that you don't have to pay the cost for a query analyzer makes a difference. | 07:15:46 |
Mic92 | In systems research we rarely use sql databases to benchmark fast storage systems because the majority of time they seem to spend in the CPU and rather use kv-stores. | 07:16:53 |
