eliasp | btw: still haven't figure out, what broke my user-sessions... doesn't matter which DE or user I'm using, I end up with a user-session where only dbus.service is running, nothing else...
will have to do some low-level debugging now | 19:47:44 |

eliasp | one thing that's off: there's no user-1000.slice or user@1000.service started for my user when logging in via sddm....
only once I login via VT, both are initialized... | 20:11:11 |
eliasp | this also explains, why I'm only seeing dbus.service in the user-session, but nothing else | 20:11:30 |
eliasp | I shouldn't have started digging here... moving /var/lib/sddm to a temporary path aside and restarting display-manager gets sddm stuck with a black screen... it looks like /var/lib/sddm is neither created by a corresponding service unit, nor by sddm itself... re-creating it manually allows to start sddm regularly once again... adding it to my notes of stuff that needs more debugging later on - but at least I know now: it has nothing to do with a bad state of sddm read from /var/lib/sddm
I feel like it has trouble with logind, since the Sleep/Reboot/Shutdown buttons are also greyed out and don't work at all...
| 20:23:45 |
eliasp | oh, understood... /var/lib/sddm is created through /etc/tmpfiles.d/sddm.conf - that's IMHO ugly and needs fixing, since this should be StateDir= of display-manager.service instead and wouldn't break on doing what I just did... ...added to my TODO-stack | 20:27:08 |
eliasp | looks like I finally found something helpful:

eliasp | aaaaaand that's it! disconnected my 2nd screen and it worked just fine π | 20:43:53 |
K900 β‘οΈ | The entire display-manager.service thing is wrong | 20:45:06 |
K900 β‘οΈ | But this is in fact what upstream does: https://github.com/sddm/sddm/blob/develop/services/sddm-tmpfiles.conf.in | 20:45:59 |
eliasp | ugh - calls for an upstream fix | 20:48:25 |
K900 β‘οΈ | SDDM upstream is ... weird | 20:49:05 |
K900 β‘οΈ | There's a good chance the entire thing just goes away in a few releases | 20:49:17 |
K900 β‘οΈ | At least from Plasma | 20:49:24 |
eliasp | you mean KDE will ship their own login-manager? or they'll pull sddm properly under the KDE umbrella? | 20:51:36 |
K900 β‘οΈ | One of those two things, yes | 20:53:17 |
eliasp | oh, any references for those rumors? would love to read more about this... | 20:54:21 |
K900 β‘οΈ | I don't think it's written down anywhere yet | 20:54:36 |
K900 β‘οΈ | But people have been discussing this | 20:54:45 |
K900 β‘οΈ | On Matrix and I think also at Akademy | 20:54:54 |
eliasp | I suspect d_ed is behind that :) | 20:55:11 |
eliasp | ok | 20:55:15 |
K900 β‘οΈ | I don't think he is actually | 20:55:30 |
K900 β‘οΈ | Fabian Vogt is the person doing most of the SDDM-adjacent work these days | 20:55:44 |
eliasp | oh, ok ... will have to catch up quite a bit with KDE stuff, I've been away from it for quite a while due to the family keeping me busy with all kinds of other stuff, but I'd love to dig deeper into all this once again | 20:56:39 |

mfed3 | Does anyone know what is going on with the KDE Plasma bug that has been persistent forever that every time I rebuild NixOS my Start Menu "Favorites" links all get broken until I log out and log back in | 04:36:39 |
K900 β‘οΈ | This should be a lot less broken on unstable | 04:40:44 |
K900 β‘οΈ | (compared to 24.05) | 04:40:47 |
aloisw | In reply to @k900:0upti.me I don't think it's written down anywhere yet There was some discussion at https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-desktop/-/issues/91 , but that might already be out of date. | 12:03:27 |
