@jee_mj:matrix.orgmjYes there was already an article on some linux news site that KDE will drop it by 6.8, this means ends at 6.708:23:02
@jee_mj:matrix.orgmjAnnouncement has gone out but if pressure mounts here’s another stick08:23:30
@aloisw:kde.orgaloiswI mean the motivation. It seems to me that it hasn't, and I would have preferred if they had announced the much earlier end right away.08:31:38
@aloisw:kde.orgaloisw(or even "we don't know how long we can still support it" tbh)08:33:15
@silverhadch07:matrix.orgHadi 🤒

Did this change since the original plan to only drop it in 7?
There never was a plan.

Its was entirely vibe based on how far https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/work_items/202 was.
08:43:19
@silverhadch07:matrix.orgHadi 🤒 Now with it almost done, the annoucement has been made. 08:43:59
@silverhadch07:matrix.orgHadi 🤒 Plasma 7 was just an estimate that later turned out to be inaccurate. 08:44:29

… and the statement "kwin_x11 is expected to be maintained until Plasma 7" in the announcement about splitting it off (https://mail.kde.org/pipermail/plasma-devel/2025-March/123654.html).
09:22:17
@silverhadch07:matrix.orgHadi 🤒 expected doesnt mean will. 09:32:57
@silverhadch07:matrix.orgHadi 🤒 This is the only thing binding with the annoucment.

@sandro:supersandro.deSandro 🐧Needed to build a lot of other stuff yesterday, too, when updating09:42:33
@silverhadch07:matrix.orgHadi 🤒 I had to build like 400 things. 09:54:35
@silverhadch07:matrix.orgHadi 🤒 And its still building. 09:54:41
@sandro:supersandro.deSandro 🐧Over 1.4k but at least half of that is my fault10:12:13
@aloisw:kde.orgaloisw I understand, I didn't say what they did was totally evil but only that it would have been better to be more open about the situation earlier. 10:14:33
@silverhadch07:matrix.orgHadi 🤒 It was always open. The Issue is publically avaible for eyes to look at. 10:16:43
@k900:0upti.meK900 I think that's just the reality of open source tbh 10:17:52
@k900:0upti.meK900The only things getting work done are 1) things that are fun and 2) things people pay for10:18:02
@k900:0upti.meK900X11 was never fun10:18:33
@k900:0upti.meK900And now no one wants to pay for the work either10:18:39
@aloisw:kde.orgaloisw The mail I linked could still have been more open that the expectation about it being maintained until Plasma 7 is not actually an expectation then. After all the issue is a year older than it. 10:19:50
@aloisw:kde.orgaloisw Anyway, looks like the AlmaLinux 9 they suggested in the announcement regarding 6.8 has both KDE Plasma and the required NVIDIA driver and the support timeframe I was hoping for, so it may actually be a reasonable solution. Still would have preferred to do it right away though :( 10:22:36
@silverhadch07:matrix.orgHadi 🤒

A Fact: Something that has already happened and can be proven.

Reality: The actual state of things as they exist right now.

An Expectation: A thought about a reality that does not yet exist.
10:24:56
@silverhadch07:matrix.orgHadi 🤒 The TODO List got worked on faster than expected. Therefore the expectation proved to be to pessimistic. 10:26:35
@aloisw:kde.orgaloisw Ah, so finally you actually provided a reason that did change after all. I assume there was some external funding for a huge effort to accelerate the timeline by roughly 5x? 10:30:07
@k900:0upti.meK900Valve at least is paying a bunch of folks10:33:12
@k900:0upti.meK900 There's also the EUgov funding now 10:33:20
@k900:0upti.meK900Which you should probably ask Raito about10:33:35
@k900:0upti.meK900If you want details10:33:48

Yes we were faster than we anticipated. So the need of the X11 side fell out.
