@emilazy:matrix.orgemily matthewcroughan: tbh, if you want to shop for switches with mainline Linux support, I would suggest looking at the DSA and switchdev devices in the kernel tree, and then try to find switches with those chips. there is more than just the Realtek, though I think the Realtek has the advantage of being in a bunch of cheap stuff 11:15:01
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilylike, you can also find the Mellanox chip in that super pricey one that way.11:15:18
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rblook at the last one, on the images it says compatible with copper11:15:17
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemWhat I really want is something I can throw openwrt or anything on, configure once, and leave alone11:15:24
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI suspect there are options between "super cheap Realtek MIPS AliExpress switches" and "$6k 100 Gbit/s switch"11:15:34
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemI just don't want "Super Cloud OS backdoor outdated bloatware" on my switch11:15:41
@emilazy:matrix.orgemily"configure once and leave alone" is incompatible with avoiding "outdated"11:16:09
@k900:0upti.meK900Just get an unmanaged switch tbh11:16:13
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemI would if I could find one, there doesn't seem to be any 8 port unmanaged things11:16:27
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdem* I would if I could find one, there doesn't seem to be any 8 SFP+ port unmanaged things11:16:31
@k900:0upti.meK900Why the fuck do you need 8 SFP11:16:38
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbthere are unmanaged sfp ones, look at horaco on aliexpress11:17:04
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemI want 8 things plugged in at once capable of doing 5GbE each11:17:16
@k900:0upti.meK900OK so rice11:17:34
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemso an 8 port sfp 10G switch seems like the right one11:17:36
@k900:0upti.meK900What are you even going to plug into it11:17:47

@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan @fosdemThis isn't SFP, so probably runs hot as all hell11:21:33
@k900:0upti.meK900You're going to be running copper anyway11:21:40
