@emma:rory.gay@emma:rory.gayever since youtube changed their bitrates i cant even watch 1080p youtube anymore11:19:17
@spaenny:tchncs.deSpaennyFrom what I know, most people who are not tech savvy who work on media just use external drives11:19:20

@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zoneThere was a random ccc style hackspace in Zurich I visited that was going to be playing with 400gpbs 11:19:43

iceland/switzerland/ireland have upwards of 7gbps as the low-end
Iceland/switzerland/ireland are a fraction of the population and no, switzerland still has places where there is not fiber. I can guarantee you that

most people do not go to hackerspaces jfc
11:20:10
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbWere talking about home connections11:20:15
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zoneI mean, there's still plenty of people who work on gamedev/media that can benefit from high speed networking, and they infact do invest quite a lot into their home infra, or they go into an office that has it11:20:54
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zoneI don't think I'm arguing about normal people? I'm not trying to disprove anything you're saying/11:21:36

@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zoneI just think high speed networking is also pretty normal, and a lot of people use it/want it11:21:59
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zonegigabit has been slow for these use-cases for a while now, I at least want 2.5gbps11:22:31
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbI agree with wanting at least 2.5 but i dont think "a lot of people use it/want it" most people dont give a fuck11:23:03
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zoneI can assure you that when you're working on nix builds, 2.5gbps is nice to have for remote builds11:23:04
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zoneand that 10gbps will make that even nicer11:23:15
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbYes, i know, but again, youre overestimating how common even gigabit uplinks are11:23:29
@emma:rory.gay@emma:rory.gaymy ISP gives me 12mbps down .... (1mbps up btw)11:23:35
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zoneto the wan, sure, I'm not debating that11:23:43
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zonebut no reason to limit your LAN :D11:23:50
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbYes11:23:54
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbThere is11:23:56
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zonethe WAN here in Liverpool is actually becoming 2.5gbps surprisingly11:24:01
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbBecause most people have nothing in their LAN except for a laptop11:24:10
@emma:rory.gay@emma:rory.gaynix remote builders are a pain even with --use-remote-subsititutes11:24:14
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zoneyeah it's not path-aware, or bandwidth efficient, hence the niceness from having a killer network 11:24:33

We had to pay multiple thousand of euros to run own fiber line in slovakia years ago to get 100/50
11:24:41
@emma:rory.gay@emma:rory.gayat least you have fiber and well... not DSL11:25:06
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbEveryone else in the down has tsl11:25:15
