it's basically that Realtek thing (and the upstream support is incomplete there anyway)
^
21:56:26
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyOpenWrt has a forked OpenWrt kernel for it etc.21:56:33
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilythere's one guy upstreaming stuff21:56:38
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbWelp, better than a web ui21:57:37
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbIm off, i need to sleep, im extremely tired, like, everything hurts, barely able to move the last few days, so bye, gn21:58:07
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zoneLemme know how it goes22:54:27
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zoneI want this too, but the SFPs are too costly for something that might not actually work22:54:42

I spent so long looking at switch stuff Linux supports and the intersection of (mainline Linux support, chip is actually in normal switches you can buy, >1 Gbit/s, <$5k) seems so empty
You'd be surprised. Anything vaguely supported by DentOS/SONiC is capable of running a Linux control plane at the very least. I just sold off the last of our Celestica switches at $149 ea. Had 5 running another Linux distribution. `mlxsw` is great, and while the switches are a little more pricey, it's basically turnkey to have an ASIC backed switch capable of running NixOS, or whatever.

@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyyeah, I saw this. but while it's still incredible hardware for $1k, it's hard to justify vs. $120 MIPS consumer switches off AliExpress you can run OpenWrt on13:30:04
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilythough $149 is of course a lot more appealing and perhaps I am just bad at finding the relevant models?13:30:50
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilywhen you say "Linux control plane" though, are we talking mainline? because it seems these Celestica things are Broadcom, and my understanding was that the Broadcom switch stuff was basically totally useless on mainline without a pile of proprietary blobs.13:31:52
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusi think SN2700 can be sniped for 400 to 500 bucks in some cases fwiw13:34:34
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusbut may still be too high above 120 USD I guess13:34:41
@tom:dragar.deTomPower Consumption is probably also slightly different between both of those options 😅13:37:14
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusyeah and transreceivers are not in the same price range as well13:37:52
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusespecially if you want to do long range13:37:56
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariussame for NICs, etc.13:38:01
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI thought those things had 10 Gbit/s ports? maybe I was imagining that.13:38:27
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusSN2700 is 32x100G13:38:42
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusthe aliexpress thing yes13:38:49
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilybut yeah as fun as it would be to play with it doesn't really serve the home use-case so much13:38:49
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusmaybe SN2010 has 10G13:38:53
* @raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezarius looks at his home13:39:12
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusyeah i guess13:39:13
