No i just want linux boxes connected over nfs
11:07:59
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbBut i do agree with matthew that fiber is cheap, though not that cheap11:09:54
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zoneit's cheap, and getting cheaper11:10:02
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zonecopper is not getting less rare, and it's not getting cheaper11:10:11
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbIts still much cheaper to find a old cat5 cable somewhere in a landfill11:10:16
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbAnd the switches are much cheaper11:10:26
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zonefiber optic is also more secure11:10:29
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbAnd you dont need sfp module11:10:31
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zoneif you want to tap copper, you just wrap soemthing around the cable and observe it 11:10:56
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rb
In reply to @matthewcroughan:defenestrate.it
it's cheap, and getting cheaper
Well, to run fiber in my new place itll be 200 euros, which is not cheap
11:10:57
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zone* if you want to tap copper, you just wrap something around the cable and observe it 11:11:01
@spaenny:tchncs.deSpaennyWell never have to run it again11:11:24
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rb

if you want to tap copper, you just wrap soemthing around the cable and observe it
And with fiber you chop the fiber and observe it, whats you point. If you want p2p security you need p2p encryption

Well never have to run it again
I may be moving again in a year or two, so in fact ill have to take it out of the floor. No one after me will appreciate having fiber in the floor
11:12:14
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zoneWell that's the difference between invasive and non-invasive surgery11:12:21
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zoneone is a lot worse than the other11:12:25
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbMost people dont run ethernet at all there days and instead rely on wifi11:12:27
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rb * 11:12:39
@spaenny:tchncs.deSpaenny Well in that case I agree with you no point 11:12:44
@matthewcroughan:defenestrate.itmatthewcroughan - nix.zoneYou can also observe fluctuations in the signal when fiber is chopped, and there are protocols that care about this and monitor it, and let you know it has been chopped 11:12:58
@spaenny:tchncs.deSpaennySounded like its your property11:13:05
