@pacien:pacien.net | In reply to @sielicki:matrix.org I'd like to request that a room be created under nix-community for nixos on wsl this room is about maintaining Matrix-related packages and modules such as chat clients and Matrix homeservers on NixOS. I'm not sure of where room and community requests should go though. Probably the main #nix:nixos.org channel? | 12:14:39 |
@piegames:matrix.org | #matrix-discussion:nixos.org | 12:15:54 |
max | In reply to @pacien:pacien.net matrix-subsystem or matrix-modules perhaps? Is this set up already? | 12:16:38 |
max | A :nixos.org user needs to publish / set this. And preferably also update it in the wiki -> https://nixos.wiki/wiki/Matrix#See_also | 12:21:58 |
max | And we should also upgrade this room at some point as the original home server that was used to create it is offline at the moment. My assumption is that the new room will have a room_id of the homeserver of the account that did the upgrade. So by upgrading this room would also have room_id again of a reachable home server. Can anyone here confirm this assumption? | 12:30:07 |
@piegames:matrix.org | max: I think you're correct, but why would this be a requirement? It's just an identifier, we don't require the server to actually be up | 12:32:29 |
f0x | yeah the creating homeserver is only there to guarantee it's uniqueness | 12:33:00 |
max | Okay, but wouldn't this prevent new people from joining? | 12:34:02 |
f0x | having the alias on nixos.org is good, since then that server will be contacted to join it | 12:36:05 |
f0x | but currently people can still join via something like https://matrix.to/#/!vxTmkuJzhGPsMdkAOc:transformierende-gesellschaft.org?via=matrix.org&via=pixie.town, those vias are always needed to know which servers to ask about the opaque id | 12:37:07 |
f0x | (and those are servers that have to be in the room at the time of joining) | 12:37:29 |
max | Alright, thanks. Makes sense | 12:43:44 |

IslandUsurper | Is there a setting or other configuration I need to do to get matrix.to invite links (as generated by Element) to work right? I've had reports of "no known servers" after they get an app. | 16:53:06 |
IslandUsurper | Yet they can sign up through Element Web just fine. | 16:54:22 |
IslandUsurper | For matrix-synapse from nixpkgs-unstable ... on some recent date. | 16:58:34 |
Dandellion | Federation needs to work but other than that there's nothing special that needs to be done for matrix.to links | 17:11:19 |
IslandUsurper | Mmkay. Since I'm here, clearly that works, at least somewhat. May be a NAT or DNS issue somewhere. I'll check the federation tool. | 17:18:55 |
IslandUsurper | Thanks | 17:18:57 |
Dandellion | making sure the .to links have some ?via=<someserver> is required if it points to a room id, and will help for normal aliases as well | 17:20:22 |
Dandellion | * making sure the matrix.to links have some ?via=<someserver> is required if it points to a room id, and will help for normal aliases as well | 17:20:30 |
IslandUsurper | They do. | 17:20:49 |
IslandUsurper | I got a connection timeout for IPv6 with the federation tester, but IPv4 was all green. | 17:21:30 |

Vika (she/her) | Matrix has sure advanced a lot in these years. I would not be able to run Synapse on a Raspberry Pi 4, say, four years ago... | 16:02:15 |
Vika (she/her) | And now I am running a homeserver on a Raspberry Pi. Its not even that slow | 16:02:31 |
hexa | join a big room, I dare you 😛 | 16:06:03 |
Vika (she/her) | It will probably just timeout, not even overload my server too much. There is a hard 60s limit on joins apparently | 16:08:29 |
Vika (she/her) | I am trying to join an irc room and it just seemingly gives up at some point, around T+60s | 16:09:51 |
