emily | I think it is okay, Rosetta 2 is just slow | 04:20:58 |
emily | I am hoping to get some of those OpenCollective funds directed towards paying for more Darwin ofborg builders | 04:21:12 |
emily | which would reduce load on the community builder anyway | 04:21:17 |
emily | (as right now we effectively have to use it as substitute ofborg due to the uselessness of ofborg) | 04:21:30 |
emily | I sometimes have to pause to let other people build stuff, but at the same time it's quiet and underutilized a lot of the time too. | 04:22:02 |
emily | btw, the community builder used to be on macincloud right? what's the story with moving to OakHost? (since it might be relevant for ofborg) | 04:22:20 |
zowoq | No, it was always hetzner before we switched to oakhost. | 04:25:11 |
emily | interesting š¤ https://opencollective.com/nix-macos links to https://www.macincloud.com/pages/dedicated.html | 04:26:00 |
zowoq | IIRC that was a machine that toonn was using. | 04:26:44 |
emily | ah | 04:27:00 |
emily | I think it makes sense to use bigger machines funded from that pool for ofborg, since that has to churn through ~every PR opened and is more generally useful to the project and committers than the community builder. I'm still in the process of coordinating everything and getting in touch with everyone though. | 04:27:22 |
emily | but my hope is that Darwin CI will work well and be fast once more for 25.05, which should also lessen demand on the community builder (though it's still invaluable of course) | 04:27:45 |
zowoq |
what's the story with moving to OakHost?
Better specs and better remote management tools.
| 04:30:00 |
emily | although given that it is bringing in ~$1k/month that is only going to one machine right now and has $20k stored up, perhaps we could simply upgrade both ofborg and the community builder | 04:30:20 |

thanks. do you know how it compares to MacStadium, which I believe the machines the Foundation rents are from? | 04:30:38 |
zowoq | I haven't used macstadium in a very, very long time so couldn't really give a comparison. oakhost has instant kvm access and remote power management so there isn't really anything that I'd say they are missing. | 04:40:30 |
emily | ok, cool :) | 04:45:33 |
emily | do you know if they have support for any kind of delegated access or if it's just one password is keys to the kingdom like Hetzner? | 04:45:55 |
emily | well, I'll check their docs | 04:45:59 |
emily | seems like oakhost is meaningfully cheaper too. thanks for the info | 04:47:30 |
zowoq | Their docs have some sort of permissions/user management but we aren't using it. | 04:53:12 |
GaƩtan Lepage | In reply to @emilazy:matrix.org GaƩtan Lepage: are you running anything actively on the builders right now? Indeed, I started expensive builds before going to bed sorry :/
In such cases, do you have the possibility to "kill" my jobs ? | 06:42:50 |
emily | nah | 07:16:36 |
emily | but it's okay :) | 07:16:38 |
emily | well, maybe I could in some way by abusing trusted-users, but I don't think that would be good | 07:16:52 |
emily | maybe we could have super-trusted-users that can kill builds, but the x86_64-darwin stdenv build wouldn't have finished in time regardless I think | 07:17:17 |
emily | we got it in before the freeze and the build didn't fail in the end so it's ok ^^ | 07:17:31 |
| @hyper-super-meta:matrix.org left the room. | 08:21:15 |

emily | I'm running a GC on the Darwin builder to hopefully get rid of the broken flaky OpenSSL build that's preventing the aarch64-darwin rework bootstrap to build | 19:52:07 |
