K900 | The ideas document is not final projects that will be approved | 13:08:43 |
K900 | And the times are estimates | 13:08:46 |
K900 | Also, as of right now no one has volunteered to mentor that particular project | 13:09:26 |
JANVI PITHADIYA | oh ok ok i thought if the org is in the gsoc list for 2026 than orgs expect students to participate in any one of the project mentioned in the ideas list | 13:14:05 |
K900 | No, the way it works is that an organization is accepted, and then has time to propose specific projects, with assigned mentors and contributors, which Google then needs to approve | 13:16:21 |
JANVI PITHADIYA | ohh ok ok thank you so much for the clarification i will research more about that particular project and provide more info if thats ok | 13:18:53 |
K900 | I've also made a note in our GSoC coordination room (which I'm somewhat involved in), so if anyone is interested in mentoring this, I will try to put you in touch | 13:22:32 |
JANVI PITHADIYA | thank you which project you are mentoring this year | 13:23:14 |
JANVI PITHADIYA | is it ok if i ask that... | 13:23:28 |
K900 | It is OK and the answer is none | 13:28:34 |
K900 | I'm dealing with the general org wide stuff | 13:28:53 |
JANVI PITHADIYA | ohh ok ok | 13:28:59 |
K900 | And probably won't have time to also work on a specific project in a useful way :( | 13:29:28 |
JANVI PITHADIYA | i am sorry are u a participant as well ? | 13:29:57 |
K900 | A participant as in contributor, no | 13:30:20 |
JANVI PITHADIYA | oh ok thanks for all the help so far | 13:30:42 |
JANVI PITHADIYA | than a maintainer ? | 13:31:02 |
K900 | I'm a member of the NixOS Steering Committee, which is basically our project's governing body | 13:32:08 |
K900 | We've been handling GSoC stuff mostly because there's no one else to do it and it all happened kind of suddenly | 13:32:47 |
K900 | I'm hoping that next year we'll have a more dedicated team/working group handle this stuff | 13:33:30 |
JANVI PITHADIYA | ohhh ok ok thats great i talked to u first | 13:36:01 |
| Zellrus joined the room. | 15:32:57 |
Zellrus | Hi, may I share my website here? It’s dedicated to searching for Nix packages. | 15:33:49 |
K900 | Yes | 15:38:11 |
Zellrus | Nix Software - a user-friendly package search website
Have you ever wanted to install a program but didn’t know its exact name? My website tries to solve this problem.
The main feature of Nix Software is that packages now have logos, screenshots, categories, and descriptions with Markdown support, all of which can be translated into different languages. Everything is managed through an admin panel.
The website also includes smart search. You can search in different languages, with typos, or even use abstract queries like "music" or "browser".
At the moment, more than a thousand packages have metadata. Users can suggest their own package information or translations. The more metadata packages have, the better the search works and the more user-friendly the site becomes.
The website also provides a public REST API for anyone who wants to use it.
I don’t speak English, so I’m using AI to help with translation. Sorry for any mistakes.
