@me:linj.techlinj It is a bit weird that, unlike 24.05, there is no restriction for breaking changes to go to master now. 06:58:28

I just copied from the release wiki lol https://nixos.github.io/release-wiki/Release-Process.html

@rosscomputerguy:matrix.orgTristan RossSo probably the release wiki should be updated if we do want to have breaking changes freeze on master07:02:08
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI was told that the branch names there were irrelevant and the intent is indeed that the total freeze is now09:58:40
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilywe're starting ZHF in a few days, so09:58:51
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI do think the wiki should be fixed though (needs timezones on the deadlines too)09:59:09

Ideally, we would use the AoE time.

@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyyou mean I could have gotten more sleep for the last-minute Darwin merges? 😄14:42:42
@rosscomputerguy:matrix.orgTristan RossMaybe14:43:14
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI was assuming UTC in the absence of any concrete information before, but AoE would probably be more convenient for contributors in America etc.14:43:50
@rosscomputerguy:matrix.orgTristan RossI updated the 24.11 release schedule to reflect the 24.05 one better with branches and I added a comment about it being AoE time.14:46:37
@rosscomputerguy:matrix.orgTristan RossGonna update the release wiki soon.14:47:00
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilycheers :)14:47:04
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilytime to break 50 things14:47:08
@rosscomputerguy:matrix.orgTristan Rosshttps://github.com/NixOS/release-wiki/pull/9514:52:12
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyit could use some clarification: e.g. are breaking changes restricted when it's the 25th anywhere on earth, or when it's no longer the 24th anywhere on earth?22:06:58
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI think the latter makes the most sense, since it means that if your clock says the 24th it's definitely okay, but currently it implies more the former22:07:25
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyfor bonus confusion, the offset is actually different between those two possibilities…22:07:36

I was thinking that as soon as the 25th hits then the changes are restricted
23:13:01
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilythat means that for a contributor in New Zealand the freeze happens as soon as their clock says the 24th23:14:04
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyor, no23:14:24
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilygah, timezone arithmetic is such a pain :)23:14:29
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyrather, it means it's really early for people in negative UTC offsets23:14:37
@rosscomputerguy:matrix.orgTristan RossI think either way, we'd run into problems 23:14:40
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilywell, "freeze is when it's no longer the 24th AoE" means that as long as your clock says the 24th it's okay to do a breaking change – whereas "freeze is when it's the 25th anywhere" means that for many people the deadline will be quite early on the 24th23:15:51
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI think "you have to do timezone arithmetic to check only if the clock says the cutoff date" is more international-friendly23:16:15
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilythough it's mostly just the same thing but offset by one day ultimately23:16:28

@hexa:lossy.networkhexaI always thought of times as in UTC02:22:31
@hexa:lossy.networkhexa * I always thought of times in UTC02:22:35
