@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisil I recently mentioned the thought of moving nix.dev to docs.nixos.org instead. While we can argue whether nix.dev or nixos.org should be the canonical domain, for now it's nixos.org, with only nix.dev out of line. So to achieve a single canonical domain, moving nix.dev to docs.nixos.org is much easier compared to moving nixos.org to nix.dev. 17:40:59
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilHere's my comment on this: https://github.com/NixOS/foundation/issues/113#issuecomment-190672270717:41:06
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilAnd an RFC draft: https://github.com/nix-rfc-canonical-domain/rfcs17:41:18
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisil Since nix.dev only really concerns the docs team, we can easily move it to docs.nix.dev without going through an RFC by just reaching consensus among the team 17:42:26
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilI'll create an issue on the nix.dev repo for this17:43:25
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisil danielsidhion: Unrelated to the above, relevant issue for you: https://github.com/NixOS/nix.dev/issues/423 17:45:41

I personally don't think they're as useful as they're made out to be, and would favor deprecating them
They're missing a lot but also they're the only real place that explains callPackage which is essential to understanding Nixpkgs

i think you mean docs.nixors.org here?

@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisil Ahh whoops, yes! 11:58:09

i actually really like the nix pills. they're a gentle introduction to nix that does a good job at motivating why it's useful & bundles together writing nix expressions with nixpkgs architecture concepts
17:53:00
@qyriad:matrix.org@qyriad:matrix.orgYes very much agreed on that17:53:16
@9999years:matrix.org@9999years:matrix.orghaving helped a few people get started with nix recently, none of them have found the nix pills on their own though17:53:33
@9999years:matrix.org@9999years:matrix.orgi would support rewriting the nix pills and moving them into a tutorial or getting started guide on nix.dev though17:53:51

including in reference docs. there are no callPackage reference docs (!)

@jade_:matrix.org@jade_:matrix.org 9999years wrote some docs for it but they were in a pr that was rejected for containing guide level docs 00:12:52
@jade_:matrix.org@jade_:matrix.org(in nixpkgs)00:13:01
@9999years:matrix.org@9999years:matrix.orgtheoretically i could've moved them over to nix.dev but i don't think the signposting is good enough for anyone to find them yet00:13:49
@9999years:matrix.org@9999years:matrix.orgi also want to get this resolved before adding more 'guide' material https://github.com/NixOS/nix.dev/issues/84500:21:33

I actually started messing around with that and got stuck in a rabbit hole to refactor callPackage...

This is the PR: https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/270696
I think it's dishonest to call that rejected. I just said that part of that PR should go to nix.dev instead. I even mentioned that the content is looking good.

@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilBtw I'm fairly lenient with documentation (at least recently). I don't really care about how stuff is written down exactly. I just check some basic stuff like if it's in the right place, if it's correct, etc. As long as that's the case, I'm willing to merge doc changes03:52:45
