| Hey folks, I've been meaning to join one of the documentation meetings and finally had time to join last thursday, but couldn't because I wasn't let in the room. Not sure if I got the time wrong or something else. Meetings happen at 15:00 UTC, is that correct? If so, anything else I should do/ask to be able to join another meeting in the future? | 04:25:45 | |
| danielsidhion: Which meeting link did you try to join? | 04:50:35 | |
| danielsidhion: Make sure it's the current one, linked in this room's topic, and the calendar | 04:51:03 | |
In reply to @infinisil:matrix.orgI followed the link from here: https://github.com/NixOS/nix.dev/tree/master/maintainers which points to https://meet.jit.si/nix-documentation Looks like it's a different link from this room's topic, so I'm glad I joined matrix at least 🥲 | 14:12:22
| danielsidhion: Oh damn, that should be fixed, nice catch! | 14:33:17 | |

| asymmetric: Would you still want to review nixdoc PRs? | 22:05:59 | |
| If so, I'm doing a few: https://github.com/nix-community/nixdoc/pulls/infinisil | 22:06:22 | |
| Actually I just merged them, not very worth reviewing them. Now released 2.6.0 :) https://github.com/nix-community/nixdoc/releases/tag/v2.6.0 | 22:31:28 | |

| Just started working on a tutorial on how to select files for sources and the file set library: https://github.com/NixOS/nix.dev/pull/802 :) | 03:29:21 | |
| Preliminary feedback appreciated, so I don't end up spending too much time rewriting it | 03:30:09 | |

In reply to @infinisil:matrix.orgi don't think i'll have time, too busy with my thesis atm. i can still work on nix.dev stuff because it requires less heavy context-switching compared to rust | 12:06:28
In reply to @infinisil:matrix.org* i don't think i'll have time, too busy with my thesis atm. i will continue working on nix.dev stuff because it requires less heavy context-switching compared to rust | 12:06:58

In reply to @infinisil:matrix.org🤩 whoa, this is beautiful! still reading through, will leave comments, but just had to leave this for now 😆 | 23:28:53
| bzm3r: Aww thanks <3 | 23:39:02 | |
| bzm3r: Note that I just pushed another commit, in case you already left some pending comments :) | 23:39:51 | |

| I'll join the docs team meeting this Monday to discuss https://github.com/NixOS/nix.dev/pull/802 Ideally I'd like to get it merged for the NixOS release in ~10 days, so we can link to it from the release notes :) | 02:19:24 | |
| Is there a team lead for the documentation team? | 03:26:40 | |
In reply to @bzzm3r:matrix.orgYes, fricklerhandwerk | 03:30:28

I recently asked someone writing for the documentation team why they were mentioning I would like to ask about the conclusions reached by the documentation team, as explained in the above posts. It is difficult for me (currently) to believe they actual facts rather than convenient fictions. Obviously, what I think does not matter, but I suppose perhaps that this gives me the room to speak freely. In the explanation for why the documentation team is operating based on the currently agreed upon rules, the following underlying points are especially difficult for me to understand:
This seems to ignore:
This seems to ignore that:

For example, imagine we have a situation where the documentation team is resource-limited, and knowledge of the system tends to live mostly in the minds/actions of people, rather than being codified centrally. Then it might make sense to capture as much of that informal information as possible as preparation for more targeted documentation efforts. The easiest way to do this is to open up an official wiki that is easy to contribute to (easy to write articles for). People can participate with ease both with respect to the presentation quality of what they contribute, and if they do not want to contribute, they can merely help improve the presentation quality. It is also easier to record disagreements on a particular area (see how the Arch Wiki handles this by showing small notification markers over controversial sections which give a quick summary of the controversy, and a link to where the discussion is being held). A resource limited documentation team can also then benefit from the Wiki by lifting those parts which can be moulded/sharpened into fully official formal documentation. Why has it been so hard to get Mic92's Wiki revival hosted?
