Yorusaka Miyabi | In reply to @andi:kack.it I want to check how much data that produces before enabling it here. OK, thanks for your early testing. | 07:11:47 |
andi- | Has anyone here used https://github.com/wal-g/wal-g before? I'm thinking of using it to have proper live backups of the database.. As the snapshop backup method just doesn't work without having 100GiB of scratch space. | 10:29:43 |
andi- | I've just looked at my personal database and it requires +100MB per additional sliding sync user within just two weeks... Not sure how sustainable this will be /o\ | 21:55:06 |

andi- | Neat. I’ll have to do some checks in the database size and then will make a decision. Last time I checked this requires 150GB of PostgreSQL storage. | 08:37:01 |

andi- | Something is off here | 10:42:25 |
andi- | I'll move the instance to a dedicated CPU instance with a bit more RAM.. it is rather tight right now. | 10:47:29 |

Andreas Rammhold | Interesting evolution of the users. I'd like to know when someone stops using why that is. Not because I want higher numbers just to have an idea of issues that might go unnoticed. | 11:01:32 |

Not because I want higher numbers just to have an idea of issues that might go unnoticed. I just joined the NixOS organization. I'd like to switch to this as my main account. The idea of a nixos home server is awesome I loveit. But tbh I'm really scared that the project gets shut down one day. That's the only thing keeping me away from using this as my home server. | 11:55:37 |
Andreas Rammhold | Thanks! I don't think this will be shut down at any point soon. While it is currently just me operating this I've had conversations with the nix-community folks about handing it over / joining them. That means bus factor >1 and also secured funding. Currently I pay about 50€/month to keep this alive. | 11:58:40 |

9glenda | It's just 50€ a month now but I have no idea how matrix scales (maybe well maybe badly). Making people pay is not a good idea at all in my opinion. But I can't expect you to pay 50€ a month in order to host a free service for me. The issue with a paid service is that it's then not really helping the community.
You have to think about the 50€ being spend on the nixos community. That's like donating 50€ a month to FOSS. You're truly helping the community. | 12:18:12 |
Andreas Rammhold | I don't mind the money. It is just a thing that we must take care of. I also don't think it will grow a lot higher. I could do more database maintance to get the storage down but that requires more time which I curren't can't commit. | 12:21:38 |
Enzime | I imagine nix-community would be happy to sponsor the hosting costs if it doesn’t grow by a huge amount | 12:22:20 |

andi- | sorry for the outage. I had started a DB vacuum, walked into the tube and when I resurfaced the databased had OOMed :| | 16:28:40 |

Andreas Rammhold | Will now continue the database maintenance that I started yesterday. Expect the server to be down for about an hour. | 14:11:03 |
