none of this is a particularly strong claim that i'm doing things valuable or essential enough to be paid for or whatever

You are definitely doing things very worthy and essential enough to get paid for. It's unfortunately not an option at the moment.

And honestly these messages scare me a little bit, as to me it seems like you might already be further on the burn out path than you might realise. I'm not sure if I should even write this here in a public room...

But please be careful about this. I'm 7 years into a severe burnout and you really don't want it.

@edef1c:matrix.orgedefoh dw my health is already down the gutter and i've burnt out in a lot of ways and on a lot of things :p10:05:34
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefbut well, no way out but through10:07:01
@delroth:delroth.net@delroth:delroth.net Infra work kind of has the unfortunate property that you can't really dissociate it from responsibilities :( 10:07:34
@delroth:delroth.net@delroth:delroth.net I mean, you can have someone work on infra without taking on responsibilities, but usually that just means someone else is doing it 10:08:04
@zimbatm:numtide.comJonas ChevalierI want to at least cover your cost of living10:08:07
@edef1c:matrix.orgedef anyway, wasn't meaning to hog the airspace this much, that was quite the wall of text from me; mostly wanted to point out that "no, not everyone has the particular feelings about money that you [Jonas Chevalier] have" 10:08:21
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefit's just one of the raw materials i need to get stuff to do work, like food and hardware maintenance10:09:16
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefi understand it's different if you have a day job that perhaps even uses Nix but leaves the fun stuff as a hobby10:10:40

yeah, and this is part of why i care about showing up for it: it's the stuff that doesn't happen and gets neglected otherwise
10:11:14
@delroth:delroth.net@delroth:delroth.net I think we're in full alignment there :p 10:11:42
@edef1c:matrix.orgedeflike we found a bunch of infra governance issues along the way just poking around at things, that have been left that way for years10:11:44
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefbecause people didn't take or hand off responsibility properly10:11:53
@delroth:delroth.net@delroth:delroth.net It's usually why I end up getting railroaded to infra work on any project I contribute to 10:12:06

I understand that, but I'm also very aware what the consequences of that mentality are. You really don't want to go down on a multi year burnout where you are unable to get out of bed 80% of your day. It's good to have a very high sense of responsibility, but those will also fall in the water if you can't function anymore (as will much of the rest of your life in that period)
10:12:24
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefand in turn, i won't leave until my responsibilities are handed off or circumstances force me10:12:28

dw I've been in tech long enough to have the "opportunity" to burn out once already, the lesson has been learned

yeah, i'm kinda past that. i don't really have much of a life outside of this right now, and i don't really go outside beyond to congregate at events with nix folk

There is a github sponsor option for the short term
10:13:56
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefmy budget is optimised for Cheap so that i can … do this stuff, and it's very cheap to stay inside :p10:13:58
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefi'm not quite so close to the wire right now, and boy am i finding out i can eat a lot when i'm not artificially restricting myself10:16:46
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefidk. that's my piece i guess, i seem to survive, i'd like somebody to working on a bunch of stuff, i also want to find a way to make my survival sustainable without quite so much brinkmanship. maybe those will overlap, maybe they won't, and so far i've not wanted to take very much time away from working because the more-fun moneymaking activities seem less essential to other people10:22:54

@edef1c:matrix.orgedefand like, there are probably other people kind of like this. if they have any sense, they will disappear in the long run. some of them are probably of value to retain and perhaps a net benefit even on a purely financial basis10:35:00
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefeg we probably could've burnt way less foundation money on the cache if we'd been more on the ball about it, and saved money on net even if we had to pay some folks to allow them to focus on it10:36:16
@whentze:matrix.orgWanja Hentzedoes the foundation sponsor individuals for e.g. project grants?10:36:53
@whentze:matrix.orgWanja Hentzerust foundation does this and imo it's been by far one of the best uses of their money10:37:04
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefthe cache preservation project has €5k allocated to me, discussed previously10:37:43
