@zimbatm:numtide.comJonas Chevalieryeah it's just an idea. btw, the infra team has been doing a ton of good things lately. my feeling is that we're moving in the right direction overall.18:25:10
@zimbatm:numtide.comJonas Chevalierbut like edef said, there is a lot of old cruft to cleanup18:25:34
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusi think as i put it now18:25:48
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezarius"let the infra cook"18:25:50
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefpretty much, yeah18:26:25
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefwe can get places, we just need latitude to operate18:26:50
@zimbatm:numtide.comJonas Chevalierand treat each other nicely. we all want NixOS to succeed, even if we have different ideas on how to get there.18:29:08
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefi hope i have not been overly inflammatory thus far, but broadly i aim to live by "strong opinions, held lightly"18:29:49
@zimbatm:numtide.comJonas ChevalierI was thinking of the conversation before :-p18:30:35
@zimbatm:numtide.comJonas Chevalier * not at all, I was thinking of the conversation before :-p18:33:34

Once engineering is done, minimal operation costs are secured (including human capital), I think the cost of running such a system is marginal
has anybody come up with a ballpark estimate for this?

as far as I'm concerned you're 100% fine

there were costs above for a Ceph cluster on Hetzner
18:34:38
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusThere's nothing about human capital because this is hard18:34:44
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefbasically, so far "how do we pay for infra" has been the main question18:35:03
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusI had a spreadsheet for rudimentary TCO for owned hardware18:35:04
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefbecause being able to pay people was too obviously out-of-budget18:35:19
@whentze:matrix.orgWanja Hentzeso infra team is all volunteers? :/18:35:59
@edef1c:matrix.orgedeflike if we had a million bucks a year then i'd build you the whole circus and fully staff it18:36:15
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefbut we don't and i can't, we just have people with mysterious motivations who show up, and we don't have enough of those to make it particularly easy on them18:37:15
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefand i name that particular number because $1M isn't "real money" in tech startup land but sounds like it to non-businesspeople18:39:56
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezarius
In reply to @whentze:matrix.org
so infra team is all volunteers? :/
always has been
18:40:23
@zimbatm:numtide.comJonas Chevalierwe're all volunteers18:44:36
@zimbatm:numtide.comJonas Chevalierhow much do you think it would cost to pay everybody involved, including nixpkgs contributions?18:45:05
@zimbatm:numtide.comJonas Chevalier100M per year or so?18:45:33
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefeh, not everyone is fulltime18:45:56
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefwe have a pretty long tail of small-time contributors18:46:09
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefi think we probably take in seven figures worth of labour tops18:47:17
@raitobezarius:matrix.orgraitobezariusand if we consider only the infra team or stuff where we need to incentivize people or everything just disappear, this is even less18:47:56
@edef1c:matrix.orgedefinfra and security are the "nobody notices or cares you exist, until you fuck up or disappear" departments18:48:28
