Ana | We have a 0.0.2 tagged now :) https://github.com/DeterminateSystems/nix-installer | 01:30:59 |

Ana | A root-only "Single user" mode is in development right now: https://github.com/DeterminateSystems/nix-installer/pull/188 | 16:53:13 |
Ana | * A root-only "Single user" mode is in development right now: https://github.com/DeterminateSystems/nix-installer/pull/188
This would enable WSL, Docker, etc | 16:53:22 |
Ana | We're also testing auto-uid-allocation since that would simplify the installer a lot: https://github.com/DeterminateSystems/nix-installer/pull/196
Notably we did find a small bug with that Nix feature running inside docker, we're working on a fix

Solène Rapenne (she/her) | hi, we have a meeting today right? :) | 08:34:25 |
@grahamc:nixos.org | yep! | 14:15:10 |
@grahamc:nixos.org | by the way, just a little note ... we saw in user studies that a lot of people would spend a long time reading the curl'd script and try to replicate what it was doing. That ended up taking a really significant amount of time of the user study, which inspired this little change for the curious: https://github.com/DeterminateSystems/nix-installer/commit/6b3a84002e1e43f5d8d2efe7e9c1edd7b89b21bd | 15:54:37 |
Solène Rapenne (she/her) | good idea | 15:59:55 |

@grahamc:nixos.org | Hey folks, should we cancel next week's call and reconvene on Wed, March 1? | 21:06:02 |
@grahamc:nixos.org | (I have a conflict that day :x) | 21:06:12 |
Matthew Kenigsberg | Okay by me! | 21:48:50 |

Ana | What's wrong, abathur ? | 21:59:50 |
abathur | someone's opened a chonky WIP installer PR | 22:01:30 |
| 14 Feb 2023 |
@grahamc:nixos.org | link? | 16:37:56 |
@grahamc:nixos.org | https://github.com/NixOS/nix/pull/7827 oh dear | 16:39:02 |
abathur | not sure about quality of the instructions, but spotted this on reddit https://github.com/dnkmmr69420/nix-with-selinux under the title "I got nix working with selinux on silverblue" | 21:34:06 |
Zhaofeng Li | In reply to @grahamc:nixos.org https://github.com/NixOS/nix/pull/7827 oh dear This would look much less chunky if the author didn't insist on reformatting everything 🤨 | 22:38:13 |
Zhaofeng Li | But based on the PR description, they don't appear to be receptive to feedback suggesting otherwise:
this is an objective readability improvement not a style-preference change.

Matthew Kenigsberg | In reply to @zhaofeng:zhaofeng.li This would look much less chunky if the author didn't insist on reformatting everything 🤨 I feel like a good first suggestion might be to split out stuff like that into it's own PR | 22:48:22 |
abathur | I had a bit of a bizarre exchange with them before they started working on this in an issue, starting at https://github.com/NixOS/nix/issues/3900#issuecomment-1268329909 | 23:06:14 |

abathur | oops; pasted wrong link first; edited | 23:07:16 |
abathur | a little surprised they elected to do this over the <5-line PR implied by that discussion | 23:10:42 |

@grahamc:nixos.org | so, we're hoping to "announce" / publish the installer on Monday | 16:28:31 |
| 24 Feb 2023 |
@grahamc:nixos.org | in the draft blog post we're putting together, we've said that...
- we saw the installer discussion on Discourse and joined the installer working group since we'd already started on an installer
- have been discussing the work we've been doing and what the installer does/doesn't do
- that our primary goal is to implement a really good installer that configures a Nix we like
- it'd be great if the greater community wants to adopt it either as-is or as a fork, but it isn't up to us to make that decision
- regularly discussed what else it would need to do to be broadly adoptable by the Nix project, and have done some but not all of that work.
does that match y'all's memories?
| 15:01:43 |
Matthew Kenigsberg | Matches mine! I think for reception you could tweak point 3 to add that we've discussed making it configurable, so that it could either install a Nix you like or a Nix the community likes
Thanks to you and Ana for all the work you've done on this :)
