Solène Rapenne (she/her) | Once the notes are ready, we could publish them in https://discourse.nixos.org/t/nix-installer-workgroup/21495/13 | 15:11:22 |
@chris:mkaito.net | A Discourse label would probably be appropriate if we are going to publish things there and expect further discussion. | 15:17:06 |
Solène Rapenne (she/her) | like a sub label of Development? | 15:19:43 |
abathur | heh https://github.blog/changelog/2022-09-28-github-actions-self-hosted-runners-now-support-windows-arm-hardware | 15:22:59 |
@grahamc:nixos.org | huh! | 16:11:11 |
@grahamc:nixos.org | I just posted the notes | 16:14:01 |
Solène Rapenne (she/her) | grahamc (he/him) thanks! could you please lock the hackmd? Anyone can edit it, it's not ideal now the meeting is over | 16:16:18 |
@grahamc:nixos.org | I can't, but I can duplicate it elsewhere | 16:16:28 |
Solène Rapenne (she/her) | or you can post it in the discourse poste | 16:16:46 |

Solène Rapenne (she/her) | they use the same syntax | 16:16:54 |
@grahamc:nixos.org | just posted it to a gist too | 16:17:22 |
@grahamc:nixos.org | thanks for that, good shout | 16:17:37 |

Solène Rapenne (she/her) | I didn't share these ideas in the meeting because I think it's not worth anything, but here they are: I wondered if it could be possible to ship nix on linux using appimage / flatpak or docker
In some situations, this may be practical, but if we already have statically compiled nix binaries, not sure it's providing anything more.
The big issues are the nix-daemon and its builder users, right? And appimage / flatpak are Linux specific, so not very helpful with regard to nix being available everywhere.
And I don't know if running nix in a docker environment could be helpful. | 17:09:57 |
Alyssa Ross | I think Nix in docker would definitely be useful, because people expect to be able to try things out in sandboxes | 17:10:45 |
Solène Rapenne (she/her) | there is already a nix docker image, but it's not made to integrates with the host system nix commands | 17:11:18 |
Alyssa Ross | AppImage wouldn't really add anything over a static binary, since it's just a way of embedding more stuff into a static binary | 17:11:27 |
Alyssa Ross | Ah, well then not sure you can really add anything useful to that. I doubt anybody wants to run Nix in docker but with a host Nix daemon. | 17:11:54 |
Solène Rapenne (she/her) | the idea would be to run the nix daemon IN the docker :) | 17:12:13 |
Alyssa Ross | ohh | 17:12:28 |
Solène Rapenne (she/her) | and have environment variables to make use of this nix daemon when you use your nix tools on your system like nix-shell | 17:12:29 |
Alyssa Ross | I doubt there'd be much advantage to Flatpak? It's mostly used for GUI applications. The only thing I can see it adding over a static binary is that it manages updates, but then so does Docker. | 17:12:52 |
