I love how "build a fucking browser" isn't even an option
I will note that the foundation never built any browser, only the corporation.
On the other hand I will echo some recent articles titles: “Mozilla Foundation lays off 30% staff, drops advocacy division”

The foundation does own the corporation though, no?
10:53:43
@vcunat:matrix.orgvcunatEither way, I get that it's easy for people to conflate their activities, as it's all "Mozilla".10:54:47
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI think the corporation is maybe meant to be operationally independent or something?10:54:49
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI don't know, it's confusing.10:54:57
@nbp:mozilla.orgnbpYes, the foundation own the corporation, but it only decide of the top-level directions, as being part of the board, but not on the product features for example.10:57:14
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyis the corporation or the foundation the one that Google pays?10:58:40
@nbp:mozilla.orgnbpWhat this survey highlight to me is: “please validate our confirmation biais, please select the A and I options.”10:58:43
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI suppose the former?10:58:46
@nbp:mozilla.orgnbpGoogle pays the Corporation, for making room in the browser UI and redirecting people to them.10:59:27
@nbp:mozilla.orgnbpThe Foundation uses donation to take away money from the corporation. They cannot withdraw more money from the corporation than they received as donation IIRC.11:00:20
@nbp:mozilla.orgnbpThis might be outdated info, and deformed over time, but I recall hearing something along these lines in 2012.11:01:55
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI sympathize with "it would be nice if they just made a browser" but also it's not clear to me that they have any viable path to sustainable finances if Google ever stops caring so I guess they're doomed to flail for any opportunity.11:03:00
@k900:0upti.meK900 The whole for-profit owned by a non-profit setup makes no sense to me 11:03:05
@k900:0upti.meK900It's so US brained 11:03:17
@vcunat:matrix.orgvcunatYou mean it should be the other way around?11:04:12
@k900:0upti.meK900I mean it shouldn't exist, I think 11:08:12
@nbp:mozilla.orgnbpfor what is worth, lawyers were not happy about creating it in the first place, as this is an unusual setup. However, a foundation can own some properties, for example a Zoo can own the land on which it is based. And this is roughly how a foundation can own a corporation. On the other hand, the fact that the foundation cannot withdraw as much money from the corporation as it desire is completely broken …11:10:57

@emilazy:matrix.orgemilywhat was the motivation to create the corporation?11:23:58
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyto be able to get money from Google, or?11:24:02
@nbp:mozilla.orgnbpExactly.11:24:41
@nbp:mozilla.orgnbpGoogle were good guys way before they decided to work for the US military.11:26:08
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyGoogle guys brainstorming in an office like what if we bait them into a crazy corporate structure where the Foundation can't access the money 😂11:28:51
