@nbp:mozilla.orgnbpThe gist: Websites that show you ads can ask Firefox to remember these ads. The website can ask Firefox to generate a report. Firefox creates a report, encrypts the report and anonymously submits it to an “aggregation service”. The website periodically receives a summary of the combined reports.10:05:29

@hexa:lossy.networkhexa * ok, so mozilla is doing the anonymization10:06:34
@vcunat:matrix.orgvcunatMostly your local browser already, right?10:06:51
@hexa:lossy.networkhexayeah, but I mostly think about the disconnect between my browsing session and the tracking data10:07:26
@nbp:mozilla.orgnbpI am not sure who is supposed to run the aggregation service, but data are supposed to be limited in spectrum to what Firefox is willing sending.10:08:31
@nbp:mozilla.orgnbpI guess the aggregation service is to be run by a trusted person too.10:09:11
@nbp:mozilla.orgnbpI met a few people a year ago which were already designing this last year, and people who have been on the tech-side of Mozilla / Firefox. So, not having much more information I would think I can trust them.10:12:58

Mozilla is working with Meta and other actors on defining an in-browser attribution API. The purpose of this API is to provide a privacy-first design for advertising companies to be able to measure how advertising drives conversions. That is, answering the question of whether advertising effectively achieves its goals, such as increased sales.

Our DAP deployment is jointly run by Mozilla and ISRG. Privacy is lost if the two organizations collude to reveal individual values. We safeguard against this in several ways: trust in both organizations, joint agreements, and operational practices.

@nbp:mozilla.orgnbp Apparently the browser is partially in charge of limiting abuses, but the third party services should not be required … if users could forward on behalf of other users. For the amount of data, doing something like the TOR network sounds valuable and prevent the aggregation from trusted services. 12:58:28
