@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyinfiniband seems cursed.14:35:55
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbit is :P^14:36:04
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rb* it is :P14:36:05
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbi need to work on my thesis, which isnt about fiber optics, so im out14:37:36
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbpls dont ping or ill never finish it :P14:37:46

Is the gpon i have here running some kind of linux or do they tend to run some embedded cursed thing?
If it's Realtek or Lantiq, it's running Linux
15:02:19
@k900:0upti.meK900If it's Huawei, it might be some weird RTOS or it might be Linux but they don't admit it 15:02:36
@k900:0upti.meK900I don't think anyone but those three actually makes PON modem chips 15:03:52
@k900:0upti.meK900Oh Broadcom is also a thing and also Linux but fuck Broadcom all my homies hate Broadcom 15:05:52
@k900:0upti.meK900And Mediatek supposedly has one (1) SoC for baseline GPON that is complete Bigfoot status 15:06:22

I wonder why rpi keeps using shitty broadcom chips
16:05:59
@k900:0upti.meK900Because the RPi leadership is all ex-Broadcom16:09:33
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rb10GBASE-LR is btw the standard of the transceiver i was looking at, what does the lr mean? Long range?16:10:33

I love making engineering decisions politically, leads to great products i swear
16:10:56
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbYeah long reach16:11:25
@k900:0upti.meK900 L is long wavelength 16:11:29
@k900:0upti.meK900R is modulation scheme16:11:33
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rb10GBASE-SR wikipedia says its lower power use16:12:19
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rbFound a 14 euro 10GBASE-SR module from ampcom16:13:05
@magic_rb:matrix.redalder.orgmagic_rb0.9 for sr, 1.0 watts for lr according to the seller16:13:45
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyLR goes longer than SR yes16:59:59
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyit's like 1 km vs. 10 km or whatever?17:00:02
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyuh17:00:42
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyoh right17:00:42
@emilazy:matrix.orgemily magic_rb: SR is for multimode 17:00:46
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyLR is for single mode17:00:55
@emilazy:matrix.orgemily(LRM is for multimode. yes this confused me so much that I forgot about it)17:01:05
@emilazy:matrix.orgemilyI found FiberMall sells "IR" (which I can only assume is non-standard for "intermediate reach") that works with SMF for cheaper than their LR transceivers. IIRC it was basically just the price of AliExpress LR ones though.17:01:46
