@hazelsudz:matrix.orghazel does anyone have any good references / blog posts to companies that have migrated away from k8s/containers to using nix for the whole stack (nixos and nixpkgs). I’m trying to understand the current gaps that exist from being “cloud native” in a large enterprise setting 20:50:04
@hazelsudz:matrix.orghazel fundamentally the main solution that k8s offers is a way to allocate resources to containers in a distributed and scalable way. I guess there’s nothing wrong with running k8s on nixos but it feels a bit yucky to then also have the complexity overhead of containers when it’s not necessary 20:57:19

@arianvp:matrix.orgArianHave you looked at nix-snapshotter?07:13:45
@arianvp:matrix.orgArianIt's a plugin for containerd to use the nix store as opposed to OCI07:14:00
@arianvp:matrix.orgArianI know of companies that run nomad on NixOS and use just binaries. 07:14:34
@apeioo:matrix.orgLorenzI think the main advantage I see with Kubernetes is the multi tenancy. With that I mean that developers are allowed to deploy and manage their own application. I think with NixOS this would be quite hard, because a nixos module can override and set pretty much everything. There is not really a permission system...16:53:54

@dgrig:erethon.comdgrig A bit late to reply, but this talk from scale 22 covers a similar topic, running things packaged by Nix in k8s pods 17:56:05

@fkouhai:matrix.orgfkouhaiI think building up your containers images with nix is really good, specially if you have security in mind16:45:15
