at some point somebody should just be empowered to make decisions.

I'm a little sad that this action is being taken:

Publicly archive the private Nixpkgs Architecture Matrix channel

... as having "direct line" to those interested in architecture and structure rather than the things being built with the structure is quite nice.

@nbp:mozilla.orgnbpI agree that keeping this channel might still be valuable.16:58:10

the "private Nixpkgs Architecture Matrix channel" is not this room
👀 I see

@qyliss:fairydust.spaceAlyssa RossThis is "The public Nixpkgs Architecture Matrix room for ephemeral discussions", listed under "The following will continue to exist:"16:58:49
@nbp:mozilla.orgnbpwhy was there a private channel then?16:59:11
@piegames:matrix.org@piegames:matrix.orgIs that question still relevant now?17:04:25

Sadness over: this room stays.

@nbp:mozilla.orgnbpI curious to understand what justified taking discussion in private instead of using this channel?17:14:43

Is that question still relevant now?

I think creating walls and barriers to contributions is always a relevant question in a FOSS community

17:26:39
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilIt's main purpose was to discuss member applications and whether to approve them17:27:41
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisil Btw I documented the existence of such a private room here 17:32:23
@jonringer:matrix.org@jonringer:matrix.orgI think I just have a philosophical opposition to making decisions "behind closed doors". Sure not everything has to be public record, but there should be some transparency. 17:39:08
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisilAgreed. I'd never want to make decisions in such a private room, and indeed we never did17:44:10
@infinisil:matrix.orginfinisil(well the NAT can't really make a decision anyways since it has no authority anyways, would be more important if that wasn't the case)17:44:37
@jonringer:matrix.org@jonringer:matrix.orgThe Nix Community is nothing without contributors, and contributors want to feel like they have some agency in how they can participate. Maybe I'm just still upset over srid getting banned over opposing the prescribed moderation decisions. Meanwhile other members of the community can hop into matrix channels, tell 3+ people to F-off, and not receive a slap on the wrist.17:44:48

Oh well I guess that private room was used to decide over new members

Anyways I'll soon share the logs of that room, it's really not very exciting. In summary it's:

  • Getting everybody to approve two new members
  • Me using the @ room in that channel to easily ping all members and ask for a new meeting time after the member were accepted
  • Me lamenting about the team not working and drafting the announcement to dissolve it

inviting bigots, like srid, who was banned, into your community is a massive contribution barrier to the people they are bigoted against. I'm not willing to debate this or rehash the moderation decision and this is not the channel to further discuss this, I just have to point out that this is something you are very notably missing.
