profpatsch | Then you can always said you mentioned the problem and nobody veto’d | 16:54:52 |
profpatsch | s/said/say | 16:55:04 |
infinisil | Hmm that might work yeah, will have to be properly talked about with the steering committee though | 16:55:15 |
@piegames:matrix.org | No, but eventually we'd have to fix our process to better match reality. And the RFC-in-repo thing is definitely a first step towards that (even though I personally don't agree with the direction it's taking) | 16:55:32 |
infinisil | And get an official special pass for that RFC | 16:55:40 |
profpatsch | infinisil: maybe start a parallel discussion on discourse | 16:55:44 |
profpatsch | And mention it from the RFC | 16:55:50 |
profpatsch | Also <insert Grace Hopper quote about forgiveness here” | 16:56:43 |
infinisil | In reply to @piegames:matrix.org No, but eventually we'd have to fix our process to better match reality. And the RFC-in-repo thing is definitely a first step towards that (even though I personally don't agree with the direction it's taking) We just had a meeting on that on Monday, see meeting notes here: https://discourse.nixos.org/t/2023-03-06-rfc-138-developing-rfcs-in-repositories-meeting-1/26075, we also need another shepherd for that RFC though, and you seem interested, how about nominating yourself? :D | 16:57:06 |

infinisil | Ah right, I remember now, no problem :) | 16:58:19 |
infinisil | In reply to @profpatsch:augsburg.one infinisil: maybe start a parallel discussion on discourse That's an idea, I'll think about it | 16:59:06 |

Alyssa Ross | Will you be talking about importCargoLock again at the next meeting? | 09:01:46 |
infinisil | Alyssa Ross: We don't have a strict roadmap yet, so if somebody brings that up I guess yeah | 09:21:19 |
infinisil | Alyssa Ross: Though last time we did say that the size increase is not clearly indicated in the PR, I would like to see more exact and contextual numbers before discussing it again | 09:59:02 |
Alyssa Ross | What numbers would you like to see, specifically? | 10:00:21 |
infinisil | In reply to @qyliss:fairydust.space What numbers would you like to see, specifically? Increase in GitHub Tarball size (absolute and relative, compressed and unpacked). We also did some rough measurements ourselves last time: https://discourse.nixos.org/t/2023-03-06-nixpkgs-architecture-team-meeting-31/26070#vendored-rust-cargolocks-5 | 10:05:32 |
infinisil | And it would be great to put the size increase in context, e.g. compare it to how much Nixpkgs grew in the past years | 10:07:39 |
infinisil | Alyssa Ross: Oh and ideally compare it to other languages like nodejs, Haskell, emacs, that have generated files in nixpkgs | 10:13:49 |

DavHau | Related to the topic Module system for packages, today I opened a PR, initializing a dream2nix re-write based on nixos-modules. phaer and me have been using this to create a new framework for python packaging, which we successfully tested on some larger packages like tensorflow, apache-airflow, odoo, etc.
All of this, including the example packages are included in the PR. It is a working example of using modules for creating packages. https://github.com/nix-community/dream2nix/pull/485
