| I am waiting for POWER8 gear to be discontinued at work to get my hands on them | 17:05:51 | |
| Even helping with migration efforts ;) | 17:06:15 | |
| ooh that'd be nice. do you happen to know what boot mechanism they use? i assume its nothing like the G5 or its POWER-based contemporaries (CHRP). what was it... OPAL & skiroot/skiboot? | 17:24:18 | |

| They boot up very much like rs/6000 ipl | 18:27:36 | |
| In my case they go to PowerVM hypervisor, but you can run AIX or any other OS | 18:28:19 | |

sorry, i meant more as in: what does it look for when detecting bootable mediums? PowerMacs look for a HFS partition on an APM disk with a blessed system dir and a tbxi-blessed bootinfo file (with all-caps SGML tags). CHRP hardware (like the RS/6000 i think?) look for /ppc/bootinfo.txt on any recognised partition. skiboot i have no clue about, ppc64le ppl might now? | 20:19:03
| No idea, I have never installed one from scratch (yet) | 21:12:08 | |

| made the code a little bit nicer and threw it into a separate repo. not sure if this is too exotic/niche/legacy to package in Nixpkgs, or if we care about nix branding in the firmware boot menu vs the generic GNU logo. | 10:18:17 | |

| handling the image format used on CHRP machines would also be nice (IBM's SLOF has a little bit on it at https://gitlab.com/slof/slof/-/blob/b7f755248e2dcc56c02634d288e1c0ff7e0ce1c7/slof/fs/packages/disk-label.fs#L535-543 , some old IBM documentation on CHRP machines' bootinfo prolly exists out there), but i don't have a machine like that to test the results on | 10:49:34 | |

machine's busy trying to build clang for the third time in a row, maybe this time it won't get killed after 1.5d of building due to OOM while swapping to disk…anyway, prolly at some other time. i should pull my focus away to more job-related things for now 😅 | 11:03:08
